North UK Mills Group Meeting

Heritage Network(formerly Heritage Trust Network) is the UK membership body for not-for-profit organisations that are rescuing, restoring and managing historic buildings, structures and spaces. Our members have delivered successful heritage projects against all odds. We operate throughout the United Kingdom, drawing together and supporting the work of local heritage charities, community organisations and social enterprises.We provide an invaluable platform for members for knowledge sharing, peer-to-peer support and skills development. Our guidance helps groups throughout the lifetime of their project, from startup to managing their restored site.  The Heritage Network also gives this extraordinary grassroots movement a united voice, representing their views to government and funding bodies.

Events where you can get together with, and learn from, others involved in community-led heritage regeneration in Scotland.

We would like to invite you to the first open public meeting of a new North UK Mills networking group. The intention of the group is to facilitate dialogue, share historical, operational and (for current and aspiring future mill conservation projects) technical /practical considerations relating to industrial and pre-industrial mills. We hope to foster in-person events (like the <a href="https://events.ihbc.org.uk/?tribe_events=spab-mill-of-benholm-working-party" title="https://events.ihbc.org.uk/?tribe_events=spab-mill-of-benholm-working-party" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mill of Benholm SPAB work party,</a> 4 May) and, by opening a facility to discuss current goings on, also to introduce many of you each other on a virtual forum. This group, facilitated by the Heritage Trust Network and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in Scotland is in its early stages -so we welcome ideas as to what such a group could do for your mill. A wider aim of this group, if feasible and there is sufficient demand will be to enable future mill projects and help inform current ones, besides attempting to retain invaluable skills associated with the upkeep of these often-unique structures, landscapes and internal machinery. We intend to hold 2 further online meetings during 2024 and then assess a future trajectory from there. Who is this meeting for?· members of the public with an interest in mill heritage,· owners or operators of commercial or converted historic mill buildings· those of us with a full-time role in developing and/or running mills Agenda outline:<ul><li>Welcome from the working group</li><li>Opening presentation from the John O’Groats Mill Trust about their current project</li><li>Some ideas about what this group could offer you via 2 further online meets in 2024</li><li>Networking break-out groups to discuss</li><li>Feedback from discussions</li><li>Considerations on how discussion ideas could shape group objectives</li></ul> More about the working group:A group of interested individuals and organisations (some of whom delivered the 2022 milling conference in Perth) have come together to explore how people and organisations working with mills could be better connected with each other and help keep these buildings, skills and mill cultures alive and accessible. We intend to keep online meetings informal and free of charge but as this venture is being facilitated by the Heritage Trust Network, you may wish to consider joining. There are free options as Connect and Support memberships. We may propose to form a ‘themed cluster’ within the Heritage Trust Network umbrella as a future group structure if consensus is favourable.
