The rise of populism has been one of the biggest political developments of recent years and there is no sign of it going away any time soon. Populist movements and leaders have changed the face of politics in Europe and beyond. Many of them have done so by using the language and symbolism of Christianity and Christendom.Drawing on a new book Is God a Populist?, a partnership between Theos and the Norwegian Christian think tank, Skaperkraft, this event will explore the populist phenomenon and what it has to do with religion. What exactly is populism? How has it used Christianity? How have the churches responded? And what can we do about it?Susan Kerr is Senior Research Fellow at the Religious Freedom and Business Foundation, and editor of Is God a Populist?Ben Ryan is Home Affairs Adviser, Mission and Public Affairs at the Church of England. He is former Head of Research at Theos and author of the book How The West Was Lost (2019). The Oslo-based think tank Skaperkraft aims to bring the role of faith and the values of Christian heritage into the public discussions of Europe.
