However, this work is not without its challenges: from resource limitations to complex political climates and unethical organisations, all of which require skilled and sensitive navigation.Join us for our next Current Stories in Global Health event as we discuss the dynamic world of global health careers.This event brings together individuals with a wide range of experience for an illuminating talk about the diverse opportunities within global health. Our panel of experts will share their insights, experiences, and tips – providing you with invaluable guidance to navigate and thrive in this rapidly evolving field. Whether you are just starting out, considering a career in global health or are a seasoned professional, don't miss this opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and learn how you can make a difference in the health of communities worldwide!The talks:Romana Kafedzic will discuss her 'zig-zag' career and working in the private sector; Harriet Labouchere will focus on different pathways into Global Health research; Getnet Tadele will share his journey from a small country boy in rural Ethiopia to an internationally acclaimed scholar and change agent in the field of Global Health; Jo Middleton will explore opportunities for Global Health graduates to integrate actions on human health and nature conservation; and finally, Vanessa Nakitende will talk about her experiences of setting up and running a Global Health charity organisation. Our speakers:Romana KafedzicRomana is a Global Health &amp; Social Impact Manager at Pfizer, based out of the UK office. Romana has had a varied "zig-zag" career, starting off as a Research Officer at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, a 9membership charity for pharmacy professionals, and working across consulting, a FTSE 100 company as a Senior R&amp;D Project Manager, and now beginning her journey at Pfizer. Romana obtained her BSc in Health Science with a double major in Public Health and Policy, and is about to complete her MSc at the London School of Economics in Health &amp; International Development. She is a strong advocate of having a zig-zag career and experiencing different sectors, learning various skills and viewpoints by challenging yourself across sectors. She is passionate about health and human rights, and seeks to positively advocate for collaboration between the private sector and development sector in improving health outcomes globally. She is currently managing the Pfizer health inequalities strategy and is motivated to deliver improved health outcomes for people in the UK, and reducing the burden on the NHS. In her spare time, Romana loves to volunteer and fundraise for charities she supports; she loves to travel and experience new cultures; she is a voracious reader and believes a growth &amp; learning mindset are great character traits for being a compassionate and motivated person, to effect real change and enjoy life.Harriet LabouchereHarriet has a background in International Development and holds a masters in Global Health from BSMS (2019 alumni!). She has worked in grant making foundations and international NGOs for the last decade. Her current role as a Research Manager at the Medical Research Foundation involves the management of multi-million pound funding calls into different kinds of health problems, ranging from Child and Adolescent Cancer Pain to the Impact of Climate Change on Health. Prior to joining the Foundation, Harriet worked for BRAC - a Bangladesh based international NGO - helping manage a portfolio of health, education and livelihood grants in East Africa.Getnet TadeleGetnet holds a BA in Sociology and Social Administration from Addis Ababa University, MSc in Health Social Science from the University of Newcastle, Australia and a PhD in medical sociology/anthropology from the University of Amsterdam. He is a professor in the Department of Sociology at Addis Ababa University. He is also an honorary professor at Jimma University, an Adjunct Professor at Bahirdar University and a Global Fellow at the Centre on Law and Social Transformation, University of Bergen, Norway. He is a Fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, past President and current board member of the Ethiopian Society of Sociologists, Social Workers and Anthropologists (ESSSWA), and deputy chair of the Board of Governors of Wolkite University. He is also a member of the Parliament Standing Committee for Health, Social Development, Culture and Sport Affairs, and vice chair of the Parliamentary Friendship Committee to EU and Western Europe. Getnet teaches internationally, publishes and presents his work extensively, and is the recipient of numerous prestigious research awards and grants. He is currently leading as the PI for Ethiopia on the project entitled: Social Sciences for Severe Stigmatizing Skin Conditions (S5 Foundation) in Ethiopia, Sudan and Rwanda, a four-year project (2019-22) supported by the National Institute for Health Research, UK.Jo MiddletonJo is jointly appointed at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (Department of Primary Care and Public Health Medicine; NIHR Global Health Unit on Neglected Tropical Diseases) and the School of Life Sciences (Evolution, Behaviour and Environment) at the University of Sussex. Their research and teaching crosses interrelated scales: parasites (especially mites and ticks) and planetary health (safeguarding both human health and the natural systems underpinning it). Before joining the university Jo worked in emergency care and taught courses for Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals staff and those travelling to remote areas. They have a long-term commitment to biodiversity conservation, with a particular focus on forest preservation and indigenous health in Oceania.Vanessa NakitendeVanessa is the Founder and Director of Siloam256 C.I.C, an organisation working to support and empower young people in Uganda who are deaf and hard of hearing to feel fully included in society and have equal opportunities to succeed, with a focus on empowerment and sustainability. Vanessa and her team strive to build a community that recognises and respects the unique abilities of the young people, empowering them to reach their full potential and become active contributors to society. Vanessa holds a Bachelor's in Psychology and Neuroscience from Nottingham University and an MSc in Global Health from the Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Alongside her professional and academic achievements, Vanessa was crowned second runner up in the 2023 Miss Uganda UK contest.
