Join us and Dr Raghunath Anant Mashelkar for Aston University's Annual Distinguished Lecture, April 22 2024.

Internationally renowned science leader to give Aston University’s annual distinguished lecture. We are delighted to announce that Professor Raghunath Anant Mashelkar will be presenting the Aston University annual distinguished lecture on 22 April. He is a highly respected globally acclaimed scholar, including leading the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. His lecture is based on his career-long contributions to the world of science. Professor Mashelkar has served on some of the most important global scientific bodies, including on the Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Engineering awards committee in UK. He has received many global accolades including the TWAS-Lenovo Science Prize (2018), the highest science prize by the World Academy of Science, and carried out ground-breaking work on intellectual property rights in India. Lecture abstractTrapeze Artistry in Biomimetic Smart GelsWe show how lifelike attributes of self-organisation, self-healing and enzyme-like activity can be created in synthetic polymeric gels. We also show how managing the delicate balance of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity led to a new molecule with applications in diverse areas such as osteogenic differentiation of stem cells to novel elastic enteric materials to a triggerable loss circulation material for drilling fluids. The role of both serendipity and organised research in these findings will be highlighted.--Registration and pre-lecture refreshments will begin at 18:00 hrs in Aston Business School. The lecture itself will be held in lecture theatre, Susan Cadbury. Following the lecture guests are welcome to join Dr. R.A.
