2 Day Foundation Course: Solution Focused Practice in Education

BRIEF was founded in 1989 and the following year held its inaugural conference at which Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, the co-founders of solution focused brief therapy, presented their ideas for the first time in Britain. The demand for training and therapy has kept BRIEF busy and expanding ever since.BRIEF is where Solution Focused Brief Therapy started in Britain. Evan George, Chris Iveson and Harvey Ratner were working in an NHS clinic when they heard about the Brief Family Therapy Centre in Milwaukee. The Milwaukee group were just beginning to publish their ideas and BRIEF arose from the successful attempt to develop these ideas within the British context. BRIEF is now Europe's largest provider of Solution Focused training with over 4000 professionals from the NHS, local authorities, education and private sector undertaking courses each year.Since the early days of Solution Focused practice BRIEF has become aware of the wider potential of the approach, developing applications in the fields of coaching, leadership, conflict resolution and team building. These developments have taken BRIEF out of the fields of health, education and social care into the corporate sector where managers and leaders are becoming increasingly clear about its transformative potential.

<H2>SF PRACTICE IN EDUCATION: 2-DAY FOUNDATION COURSE FOR EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS</H2>
This is a Foundation Course designed specifically for professionals in education. You will probably know of colleagues who have trained with BRIEF and will therefore know that this is one of the most useful courses you are likely to attend. Solution Focused thinking is already having a massive impact on all aspects of education and is making a difference behaviour, attendance, school achievement, leadership and staff morale. If any of these issues are of concern to you this course will be of great benefit.
You will learn lots and, paradoxically, much of it you will already know. But you will know it in a much more usable way. You will know that focusing on resources and possibilities is more productive than examining deficits and blocks and you will know that conversations can influence thoughts, feelings and behaviour. A Solution Focused approach provides a simple framework for managing these influential conversations which have the capacity to improve:

This two-day Foundation Course will be geared specifically towards teachers, psychologists, learning support staff, mentors and any other professionals in the field of education. Just as in our other introductory courses you will learn all the essential skills of Solution Focused practice and be able to start building on them as soon as you return to work. Solution Focused practice is like a new language – it has to be practiced to be learned. The course will therefore be practice-focused with participants working in pairs and small groups completing a number of well-managed exercises. There will also be a chance to see videotapes of Solution Focused work in schools and with parents.
BRIEF has many years’ experience of working in schools and our most recent book is Solution Focused Practice in Schools: 80 Ideas and Strategies by Yasmin Ajmal and Harvey Ratner (Routledge 2020).
