Christina will share ideas to help manage stress and protect yourself against infection naturally using herbs that are in the garden

In this talk Christina draws on her extensive knowledge of herbal remedies through the ages to provide us with some interesting ideas for managing stress naturally.Her talk will include references to making protective posies of herbs against infection, as well as pomander beads made to protect against “noxious air”. She will also talk about Clove pink syrup, which was taken by the settlers on their perilous voyage across the Atlantic in the seventeenth century for anxiety and is a popular remedy today in Christina’s practice, and using cowslip syrup for insomnia.The talk will include the use of herbs that can be found in the garden, such as rosemary, mints, roses and bitter orange flowers. Christina will explain how to make a moist pot-pourri to last a lifetime.She will also show us how to make a panic pillow. If you wish to make your own panic pillow along with Christina you will need the following ingredients to hand: <ul><li>2 ½ cups of Lavender</li><li>1 cup of chamomile flowers</li><li>½ cup of limeflowers, bracts removed</li><li>1 tablespoon of marjoram</li><li>1 heaped tablespoon of sage</li><li>½ tablespoon of aniseed</li><li>½ tablespoon of orris root powder</li><li>3drops essential oil of clary sage</li><li>2 drops essential oil of geranium.</li></ul>Christina Stapley has been working with herbs for over 45 years and has grown more than 300. She has written a number of books on growing and using herbs including Herb Sufficient, Herbwise Naturally, Herbcraft Naturally, The Tree Dispensary, The Receipt Book of Lady Anne Blencow, The Lemonade Tree and A History of Plant Medicine. She also teaches pharmacognosy, materia medica and the history of western herbal medicine and has appeared on a number of television programmes including Autumn Watch and the Antiques Road Trip. She is a member of the Herbal History Research Network and has carried out extensive practical research on medieval and Tudor medicine.
