We will discover the stylistic features of paintings by Perugino, and use what we have learnt to see how he influenced the young Raphael

The National Gallery

Raphael was one of the most brilliant and original artists of the Italian Renaissance, and he was also one who believed most in collaboration. He was like a sponge - absorbing everything he came in contact with, and making it his own. In this way he was influenced by all of the artists he met and worked alongside.In this session we will look at one particular relationship. Having trained with his father, and then his father's workshop, at the court of Urbino, he moved to Pergugia while still a young man. There he was enormously influenced by the artist who takes the city's name: Perugino. Vasari even said that, at times, it was hard to tell the difference between the two. We will evaluate the accuracty of the 16th century artist and author's assertion by looking closely at some paintings by Perugino, determining what are the most significant elements of his style, and then comparing what we have learnt to see what bearing this has on early paintings by the more famous master.As ever, we will limit the group size to enable individual observation and discussion - altogether we will be no more than 12.
