The Border: the legacy of a century of Anglo-Irish politics

This lecture is the postponed Arbuthnott Lecture from November 2019.This lecture is an annual event funded by a trust established by the family and friends of Justin Arbuthnott, an Edinburgh University History student who was drowned along with three friends one night in July 1989 when their boat capsized off the coast near County Donegal in Ireland. Arbuthnott Lectures have been delivered in recent years by HE Adrian O’Neill, the Irish Ambassador to the UK, Mary E. Daly, prominent historian and former President of the Royal Irish Academy, the writer and public intellectual Fintan O’Toole and Roy Foster, the distinguished historian and commentator.The Justin Arbuthnott Trust, held by the University of Edinburgh, provides a PhD scholarship each year and supports this lecture, both of which are designed to promote the better understanding of Ireland and various complex relationships which link Ireland and Britain .Professor Diarmaid Ferriter (University College Dublin) will present this year&#x27;s Arbuthnott Lecture - The Border: the legacy of a century of Anglo-Irish politics.Diarmaid Ferriter is one of Ireland&#x27;s best-known historians and is Professor of Modern Irish History at UCD. His most recent book is The Border: the legacy of a century of Anglo-Irish politics (2018). His earlier books include The Transformation of Ireland 1900-2000 (2004), Judging Dev: A Reassessment of the life and legacy of Eamon de Valera (2007), Occasions of Sin: Sex and Society in Modern Ireland (2009) and Ambiguous Republic: Ireland in the 1970s (2012) and A Nation and not a Rabble: The Irish Revolution 1913-23 (2015) He is a regular broadcaster on television and radio and a weekly columnist with the Irish Times. In 2010 he presented a three-part history of twentieth century Ireland, The Limits of Liberty, on RTE television.The talk will be followed by a drinks reception.
