What is the 9+ Preparation Classes?

Our 9 Plus Preparation Programme provides structured, age-appropriate teaching across all areas commonly assessed in 9+ entrance exams, including maths, creative writing, comprehension, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, as well as exam practice and interview preparation.

We prepare children for independent school entrance exams in London and the surrounding counties, with a strong track record of supporting families through the process. To date, we have helped over 900 pupils, including preparation for schools such as Dulwich College, Alleyn’s and King’s College School, as well as many others.

We recognise that the 9+ is a competitive assessment and that outcomes depend on factors such as when preparation begins, a child’s individual strengths, and the level of competition. For this reason, pupils are assessed on an ongoing basis, allowing us to provide honest, professional feedback on progress and suitability.

After an initial period of tuition (typically 4–8 weeks, depending on age and level), we can give parents clear guidance on strengths, areas for development and whether continued preparation is appropriate. We only recommend ongoing tuition where it is in the child’s best interests and where we believe meaningful progress can be made.

Who is the 9 Plus preparation programme for?

Our 9 Plus Preparation Programme is suitable for pupils in Year 2 through to Year 4. Children are placed into small groups according to both year group and ability, ensuring teaching is appropriately paced and targeted to individual needs.

The Year 2 and Year 3 programme focuses on building strong foundations across all four assessed areas: maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Pupils are taught key problem-solving techniques and gradually introduced to exam skills such as timing, question approach and early mock-style practice.

Advanced vocabulary development and creative writing are introduced within group sessions to encourage discussion and collaborative learning. This approach allows children to develop their writing skills within a supportive and engaging environment, while also learning from their peers.

The Year 4 programme is designed to consolidate and refine knowledge across the full 9+ syllabus. At this stage, there is a stronger emphasis on exam practice, accuracy and proficiency, alongside interview preparation, which is an important component of many independent school 9+ assessments. Pupils are also taught how to apply efficient exam techniques to maximise marks.

Classes run throughout the year, and children may join at any stage, as the programme is designed to cover the full syllabus on a rolling basis. However, starting earlier allows pupils more time to develop skills gradually and practise confidently.

Testimonials

“My children started attending since July last year and I cannot recommend enough. Within three months Jane prepared my daughter for St Pauls, Francis Holland and Henrietta Barnet Schools. I have taken both group face to face and individual classes.”

“I have known 11 plus London since 2019 (pre- pandemic). Jane and her team helped my son navigate the path to the 11plus exams. They worked on his weaknesse with a lot of patience. The team is very approachable, polite and honest especially Jane. My ds got into QE boys Barnet with a decent score. They have been helping my daughter for her exams in 2025 and are a big help in building her confidence. I would genuinely recommend the lessons”

“Excellent Saturday school and tuition. Run by friendly, professional people with many years of experience with the schooling systems (grammars and fee paying private schools). My son attended from age 8 to 10 when he sat the 11+ and passed Kent grammar exams with flying colours. I recommend 11PlusLondon very highly and now use them for my youngest son, who enjoys the classes.”

“I couldn’t be happier with the tutoring service provided by 11 Plus London. From the outset, they demonstrated professionalism and a deep understanding of the 11 Plus curriculum. Their tailored approach to teaching ensured that my child not only grasped challenging concepts but also gained confidence in their abilities. With their guidance, my child excelled in the exams, achieving outstanding results. I highly recommend their services for anyone seeking top-notch 11 Plus preparation. Five stars without hesitation!”

“When we initially joined, we understood that our daughter needed to academically excel in order to be competitive for the 11+ exams so we joined these classes. From the very first week, my daughter came home intrigued, happy and keen to go back.
The classes are fun, well planned, engaging and buzzing with a can-do ambience.
The first week’s homework was somewhat daunting for me as the parent as I though oh there a lot here to do, how is this going to be possible, but my daughter enjoyed and relished the challenge which was a big surprise.
The journey hasn’t been an easy one as I’m sure any parent will tell you going through the 11+ process but what I can say to you is that these guys make it a whole lot easier, more relaxed and are always on hand to help. Whether that is you’ve got a question regarding the whole process of things or that the child isn’t quite getting the hand of the new work material they have just learnt, this is the place to be…”
