Ellis Whittam and the Scottish Ethnic Minorities Lawyers Association (SEMLA) are delighted to announce that we are co-hosting an event.

Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow

We will hear from The Honourable Mr Justice Choudhury and Sheriff Aisha Anwar on their paths to the judiciary. 
Sir Akhlaq Choudhury grew up in the outskirts of Glasgow. He is a graduate of the University of Glasgow (BSc Physics) and the School or Oriental and African Studies, University of London (LLB (Hons)). He called to the English Bar (Inner Temple) in 1992 and took Silk in 2015. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2009, a Deputy High Court Judge in 2016 and a High Court Judge, assigned to the Queen’s Bench Division, in 2017. He was appointed President of the Employment Appeal Tribunal in 2019.

Sheriff Anwar is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh (LLB (Hons)) and University of Oxford (BCL). She spent 13 years in private practice including holding the role of partner and Head of Litigation at DLA Piper. She was appointed as a part-time Sheriff in 2011 and has been a full time Sheriff at Glasgow Sheriff Court since 2014. 
Attendees will also hear from the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland (JABS) about the importance of diversity in the judiciary and the recruitment process in Scotland.

This event is a fantastic opportunity for students and lawyers to hear from two inspiring role models who have achieved great success in their careers. 
 Registration starts at 5.30pm. The event is due to commence at 6pm and conclude at 8pm. There will be opportunities to ask questions of the speakers and network. Register now to reserve your place for this free event!
