A collection of seven commons found on the borders of London and Surrey; Ashtead Common, Farthing Downs, Coulsdon Common, Kenley Common, Riddlesdown, Spring Park and West Wickham Common. Our sites are managed by charitable trust to protect and conserve their wildlife and heritage value and for the recreation and enjoyment of the public.Ashtead Common: Registered charity no. 1051510. Learn how to identify trees in the winter! You’ll get to know the key features and tell-tales clues of many tree species.

Coulsdon Common - Merlewood Estate Office

Even though there are no leaves on the trees, winter is surprisingly one of the best times to identify trees! With expert botanist guidance from Jane McLauchlin, you'll learn some of the native British tree species based on twigs, buds and tree shape. This will be a mixture of indoor classroom learning and outdoor exploration on Coulsdon Common. Please bring sturdy footwear and warm clothes. Suggested donation of £3 contributes to vital conservation work on the Commons. This workshop is perfect for beginners or those who want to practice some of their identification skills. Refreshments are provided. Sorry, no dogs are allowed to this event.Meet outside the Merlewood Estate Office and entrance to Coulsdon Common.
