‘For Such a Time As This’ is the debut book by Shani Akilah, which presents a poignant collection of interconnected stories that follow a group of young, Black British friends navigating the complexities of modern life in London. From the excitement of new relationships to the challenges of online dating and the shadow of workplace racism, these narratives burst with romance, friendship, and resilience. Against the backdrop of contemporary issues, including the isolation of Covid-19, Akilah's vivid prose captures the essence of human connection, inviting readers to immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of relationships that shape the characters' lives and identities. Join us for an unforgettable evening of literary exploration at our event celebrating ‘For Such A Time As This’. Held at The Africa Centre, echoing the ancestral roots portrayed in Akilah's stories, the event promises a captivating experience. Doors open at 6:30 PM, with the event starting promptly at 7:00 PM. The event kicks off with readings by Shani Akilah, delving into select narratives, and an intimate conversation between Bounce Black founder Nikki Adebiyi and Shani about her authorship journey. Following this will be an in-depth panel discussion on the book's themes, including friendship, workplace discrimination and mental health. Hosted by Bounce Black in collaboration with the Young Africa Centre, Black Blood Matters, Black Minds Matter UK and Oneworld Publications, this event is not to be missed! Shani Akilah is a Black-British Caribbean writer and screenwriter from South London. She is a book influencer, co-founder of the Nyah Network, a book club for Black women, and was a literary judge for the Nota Bene Prize 2023. Shani has a Masters degree in African Studies from Oxford University. For Such A Time As This is her debut short-story collection, and copies will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of Round Table Books.
