<h3>Myths and Music</h3> How do myths and music shape our understanding of history and identity?Music has been a versatile and powerful medium throughout history, serving diverse purposes, from storytelling and cultural expression to being a powerful tool for liberation movements throughout history, serving as a means of expressing resistance, solidarity, and hope.Even when we don't fully understand the complexities of music, we can deeply connect with its essence. <h3>A history</h3>African oral literature encompasses various forms, including folktales, myths, legends, proverbs, riddles, poetry and music.In West Africa, tales of legends are shared and passed down through music, accompanied by the sounds of the Kora.These stories are told by the Jali, also known as the Griots, who are deeply rooted in the history of the Mande Empire during the 13th to 16th centuries. <h3>A Visual And Audio Celebration</h3>Join us to explore a special collaboration, "Myths And Music," co-designed with one of our team members, Molamin Kamaso, a Jali who lives in The Gambia.This story is told through the childhood experiences of a young Molamin in The Gambia.He takes us on a journey of learning about the Kora, how it came to humankind, and his journey of learning to play it.

Prepare for a captivating auditory journey as we celebrate the essence of our planet through the kora's enchanting sounds, a journey that will leave you eager for more. <h3>Jali Bakary</h3>Meet Jali Bakary, the grandson and son of legendary Gambian kora players Alhaji Bai Konte and Dembo Konte. Alhaji Bai Konte is renowned for bringing kora music to a global audience with his iconic 1973 album, Kora Melodies From the Republic of the Gambia, West Africa.Born into this extraordinary musical lineage and deeply rooted in Gambia's griot tradition, Jali Bakary is a highly versatile musician. He adds his personal touch and innovations to traditional songs, creating unique melodic and rhythmic arrangements that are sure to intrigue and captivate.He regularly performs solo with his band Minyanta and with the Balimaya Project—a new 13-piece collective that fuses West African folkloric music with jazz. Jali Bakary released his debut album, Konteh Kunda, in 2010 and currently resides in London.Experience the global acclaim of Jali Bakary's performances across West and North Africa, the UK, and Europe. His talent has graced renowned stages such as WOMAD, the Roskilde Festival, and the Barbican, leaving audiences in awe of his musical prowess.
