Hedge-riding: language, the land and strategies of resistance

Three Rivers is a free-floating social arts agency. We work with local partners to support creative practices, which recognise, resource and respond to people, place, land and community, in the London Borough of Bexley.Three Rivers is funded by Arts Council England, through a programme called Creative Places and People, which focuses on parts of the country where involvement in arts and culture is significantly below the national average.

Beneath the pavement, the marshes

Beneath the pavement, the marshes is a two-year action-research programme delving into the cultural, ecological and political dynamics of Crossness and Erith Marshes.

<h3>Delving into the history of hedge-practices and the enclosure movement in the UK, this walkshop will unravel the ways in which language has been and continues to be used to sever our connection with the land, and build on existing grassroots strategies of reclaiming land through reclaiming language. Language and the land are continuous, if we lose one we lose the other.</h3><p><br></p><p>Participants will be invited to explore the Nature Reserve alongside Ailo, where they will engage in creating a new vocabulary for the site, discovering and identifying words that resonate with the various inhabitants and elements of the Crossness Marshes.</p><p><br></p><h4><strong><strong>About Ailo Ribas (Al Wah’at)</strong></strong></h4><p>Ailo Ribas is a Catalan-English writer, researcher, community organiser, and gardener engaged in cultivating disappearing folk knowledge and foregrounding othered perspectives through communal practices of care. She is one of the organisers of London Trans+ Pride and a co-founder of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/alwahat.collective/" title="https://www.instagram.com/alwahat.collective/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><em><em>Al-Wah’at</em></em></a>, an artist-research collective committed to growing communal practices in ecologies typically regarded as hostile and lifeless (winners of the COAL prize 2023 and 2025 Van Eyck Academie residents).</p><p><br></p><h4><strong><strong>Important Details</strong></strong></h4><ul><li>This event is FREE and open to everyone. However, participants under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.</li><li>Spaces are limited, so booking is essential.</li><li>Entrance: on Norman Road. Additional information about the meeting point will be sent the day before the event.</li><li>Note: Onsite parking is available. Please consider arriving on foot, by bike, or using public transport.</li><li>Nearest Station: Abbey Wood</li><li>Nearest Bus Stop: Picardy Manorway Eastern Way. Buses: 401 - 601.</li></ul><p><br></p><h4><strong><strong>Accessibility Notice</strong></strong></h4><ul><li>The workshop is not fully accessible for individuals with limited mobility.</li><li>The terrain is mostly flat but includes some stony areas, small inclines, and uneven grasslands.</li><li>The site is outdoors with limited shelter and can become muddy after rain. Please wear appropriate shoes and clothing. Bringing water is also recommended.</li></ul>
