<h3><strong>Help build an online map highlighting the incredible history of the Gwent Levels!</strong></h3><h3>Love history? Join archaeologists starting a brand new search for historic sites on the Gwent Levels.</h3><h3>This <strong>outdoor</strong> event is part of a series of workshops where archaeologists and local history-lovers work together to locate, investigate and identify historic sites on the Levels' landscape. Together, we're aiming to create an online map showcasing the area's extraordinary history. </h3><h3>Using 3D LiDAR (laser) models and digital maps (GIS - Geographic Information Systems), we’ll show you how to spot areas of historical significance on the landscape and figure out what they are. You’ll learn how archaeologists search for sites in the landscape, and try finding some for yourself.</h3><h3>But it doesn’t stop there…</h3><h3>In this workshop, we'll actually <strong>head out into the field</strong> to get a first-hand look at historical features in the landscape. There's much more to discover when you combine desk based research with real life, on the ground investigation. </h3><h3>Please note: We will be driving from the meeting location to the sites. If you need a lift, or are happy to give one, please let us know in advance. </h3><h3></h3><h3><strong>FAQs</strong></h3><h3><strong>*Who can join?*</strong></h3><h3>Anyone aged 12+ who is interested in history and how archaeologists discover new sites.</h3><h3></h3><h3><strong>*Where do I meet you?*</strong></h3><h3>The workshop is being held at Marshfield Village Hall, Wellfield Road, Marshfield, Cardiff, CF3 2UB.</h3><h3></h3><h3><strong>*What do I need to bring?*</strong></h3><h3>- Packed lunch and snacks</h3><h3>- Bottled water</h3><h3>- Weather appropriate clothing</h3><h3>- Sturdy boots or walking shoes. </h3><h3>- Computer and laptops are <strong>not </strong>needed for this workshop. However, you may want to bring along a tablet to use in the field. <strong>Please note: we will be using these devices outdoors, in all weather. Living Levels and DigVentures hold no liability if devices are damaged or broken.</strong></h3><h3></h3><h3><strong>*What will the day be like?*</strong></h3><h3>The day will run from 9.30am to 4.00pm - rain or shine! </h3><h3>9.30am - Meet at Marshfield Village Hall. We'll start the morning with a brief introduction to the project and to each other. </h3><h3>10.00am – Indoor session: What is Lidar and how do we use it to read the landscape? </h3><h3>12.30pm – Lunch</h3><h3>1.15pm- Outdoor session: Visiting sites on the landscape.</h3><h3>4.00pm - End of day.</h3><h3></h3><h3><strong>*What will I learn?*</strong></h3><h3>In this workshop, you will learn how archaeologists use laser models and digital maps to locate, identify and learn more about historic landscapes - and how you can do it too. We'll also be paying a visit to a few sites on the Gwent Levels to learn more about understanding and documenting historic landscapes.</h3><h3></h3><h3><strong>*Who is organising the event?*</strong></h3><h3>This event is part of Living Levels, and is being run by DigVentures and the Living Levels Partnership. Together with local residents, historians, archaeologists, archivists, and anyone who is even just a little bit interested in history.</h3>
