Join us at Railway Land Nature Reserve, Lewes, to help build the WORLD’S FIRST hand-made beaver lodge with expert Dylan Walker

Join us at Railway Land Nature Reserve, Lewes, on Sunday 4 August at 10:30 AM for the most exciting event of the year as we build the WORLD’S FIRST hand-made beaver lodge!During this family-friendly event guided by wildlife expert Dylan Walker, participants will gather natural materials and collaboratively weave together branches to create a natural, artful structure that mirrors beaver techniques! The plan10.30. Meet at the Linklater Pavilion situated at the entrance to the reserve at Railway Lane and walk down to the Dipping Pond where the beaver lodge construction will take place.10.45 - 11.00. Welcome ceremony from the Queen of the Beavers(!).11.00 - 11.15. Introduction as Dylan talks about beavers, their importance to people and nature, and how they build their lodges (plus health and safety).11.15 - 11.30. Team Formation. Volunteers are divided into teams, each with a unique name like "Lodge Legends," "Dambuilders," and "Beaver Believers."11.30 - 12.30. Construction begins! Teams work together to build the inner lodge, including living quarters, eating quarters and entrances.12.30 – 13.00. Lunch and beaver games (please bring a packed lunch with you).13.00 - 14.00. Timber framed building! Teams work together to build the lodge walls and roof, including a ventilation hole to moderate the temperature indoors!14.00 – 14.45. Mud-mixing and roofing! Mud-splashing fun with a designated “mud zone” for kids (and adventurous adults) as teams work together to waterproof the lodge roof with mud from the pond!14.45 – 15.00. Completion! Opening ceremony and general back slapping exercise! Why oh why are we doing this?By beavering together we will create a superb lodge which will provide a sanctuary for all sorts of wildlife. Although there are no beavers in the area at present, the lodge will also act as a work of art, encouraging visitors to consider a future in which we live in harmony with these spectacular mammals in the knowledge that their constructions can protect us from fire and flood.
