Decades of evidence has emphasised the importance of the first 3 years of life and at the same time, there has been increasing demand for out-of-home provision for babies, toddlers and 2-year-olds. And yet the focus on the wellbeing, play, development and learning of 0–3-year-olds often waxes and wanes.In this seminar we will think about why it is important that we keep our youngest children at the forefront of our minds and central to our practice and provision. We will revise key ideas about the play, development and learning of 0–3-year-olds and their key characteristics and identify key aspects of practice that support their well-being.This will include the importance of focusing on respectful care practices and how to nurture babies and young children’s positive sense of self, competence and autonomy.We will also consider that to effectively support children’s well-being, the well-being of practitioners must also be supported, so we will consider key issues for birth to three practitioners and strategies for maintaining positive professional relationships.
