The title of the talk is “The biographer’s degree of freedom, and his responsibility before both hero and reader”. The event will be taking place in Russian.

Родился в Москве, c красным дипломом окончил факультет журналистики МГУ им. М.В. Ломоносова. Служил в армии, с 1982 года печатался как журналист.Автор 65 книг стихов, прозы, публицистики, биографий и литературно-критических статей. Биограф Бориса Пастернака, Булата Окуджавы, Максима Горького и Владимира Маяковского. Участник проектов «Гражданин поэт» и «Господин хороший», в которых актёр Михаил Ефремов читал стихи на «злобу дня», написанные Дмитрием Быковым в жанре политической сатиры на манер известных писателей и поэтов.Трижды лауреат премий «Большая книга» (за биографию Бориса Пастернака, романы «Остромов, или Ученик чародея» и «Июнь»), «Национальный бестселлер» и премии имени Аркадия и Бориса Стругацких. Born in Moscow, Bykov graduated with a distinction from the department of journalism at Moscow State University. He served in the army, and from 1982 began his career in journalism.Bykov is the author of 65 books of poetry, prose, journalism, biographies and articles of literary criticism. He has written biographies of Boris Pasternak, Bulat Okudzhava, Maksim Gorky and Vladimir Mayakovsky. He has played a role in the projects Poet-Citizen and A Good Man, in which the actor Mikhail Efremov read the poems In Spite of the Day, written by Bykov as a form of political satire of the styles of well-known writers and poets.He is a three-time winner of the Big Book prize (for his biography of Boris Pasternak, and his novels Ostromov, or the Sorcerer’s Apprentice and June), and he has also won the National Bestseller and the Arkady and Boris Strugatsky award. He has received a range of awards in the fields of journalism and science fiction. His biographies have been translated into French, Italian, Norwegian and Chinese, while his poems and novellas have been published in English and German.

Родился в Москве, окончил филологический факультет Московского государственного университета. Дебютировал как прозаик рассказом «Тараканы» в журнале «Октябрь» в 1987 году, первая книга «Дом в Остожье» вышла в 1990-м. Известность автору принесли роман «Лох» и повесть «Рождение», получившая литературную премию «Антибукер». Автор многих книг прозы, ряда публицистических и литературоведческих статей, а также биографических книг о Григории Распутине, Михаиле Булгакове, Андрее Платонове, Александре Грине, Василии Шукшине, Алексее Толстого, Михаиле Пришвине. Varlamov is a member of the Culture Committee for the President of the Russian Federation, and the Rector of the A.M. Gorky Literary Institute.Varlamov was born in Moscow, and graduated from the philology faculty of Moscow State University. His prose debut was the short story Cockroaches in the journal Oktyabr in 1987, while his first book, A House in Ostozh, came out in 1990. His novel Sucker and the novella Birth brought him fame when the latter won the Antibooker prize.He is the author of many books of prose, dozens of journalistic and literary articles, and also biographies of Grigory Rasputin, Mikhail Bulgakov, Andrei Platonov, Alexander Green, Vasily Shukshin, Aleksei Tolstoy, and Mikhail Prishvin. He has received the Big Book for his biography of Aleksei Tolstoy, and the Solzhenitsyn Prize, “For the subtle tracing through fiction of the strength and delicacy of the human soul and its fate in the modern world; for a conceptualisation of the paths of Russian literature in the 20th century via the medium of writers’ biographies.” He has also been awarded the Patriarch's Literary Prize of Cyril and Methodius, the Leipzig literary club Lege Artis Prize, the Student Booker for his book The Imaginary Wolf («Мысленный Волк»), amongst others. The author’s works have been translated into German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Bulgarian, Chinese, Vietnamese and other languages.

Lev DanilkinLev Danilkin is a writer and translator. He was born in Vinnitsa, Ukraine, and has a doctorate from the philological department of Moscow State University. He is the author of seven books, including three biographies: The Man with an Egg: the life and views of Alexander Prokhanov was shortlisted for the Big Book and National Bestseller prizes, Yury Gagarin won the Alexander Nevsky prize, and his book Lenin. The Pantocrator of Solar Dust received first place in Russia’s largest literary prize, the Big Book, and was named Book of the Year in the Prose category.He is also the author of three books dedicated to yearly critical reviews of modern Russian literature: The Parthian Shot, A Wander through the Guts of a Beggar, and Numbered from the Rear.Danilkin has also published Kludge, a collection of essays and short stories. He is the editor, compiler and author of the preface to a collection of the selected works of V.I. Lenin (Lenin: Pons Asinorum). He has translated Julian Barnes’ Letters from London into Russian.Danilkin was chair of the jury for The A.S. Pushkin Lyceum Prize for young Russian authors below the age of 35 (2008), and has been a recurring member of the jury for the Russian-Italian Gorky Prize (2007-2015), and the National Bestseller (2002).In 2017-18 he taught the Modern Russian Literature course at the philological faculty of the Higher School of Economics.His books have been translated into Italian, Polish, Serbian, Hungarian and French.
