Walking Like a Tortoise Workshop for Children

The Walk Club, Edinburgh and other walking activities take place in North Edinburgh and elsewhere. Covering a wide variety of subjects and themes, the Walk Club is a brand-new Edinburgh walking / wheeling club offering ambulatory meet-ups that focus on local history, art, and urban nature ~ with a twist ~ Each walk will have a theme and celebrate events such as the Festival of Terminalia, the Urban Tree Festival, May Day, and the Autumn Equinox. The walks will be stimulating and the company friendly. Fresh air and gentle exercise are promised, whether you are on wheels or feet, and the Walk Club is open to everyone. Children and dogs are welcome. The aim is to be accessible, inclusive, and flexible.Moving slowly through the urban landscape allows for higher quality noticing and time to pay attention. Pauses are important so we can look, smell, and discover. We will embrace community, as well as silence and conversation.With experience in the arts and community settings, I offer walks (ecological, history and psychogeography, for example) in Edinburgh and elsewhere in Europe. They are participatory, safe and inclusive. I also run workshops in venues such as Edinburgh Central Library and for festivals such as the Festival of Terminalia.

For children with parents/carers: conversation, participation and hands-on art

This workshop is based on the Walking Like a Tortoise mixed media exhibition mounted at Central Library (in the foyer and stairs display cabinet - more information below) and is for children with parents / carers. Age: 5 years + (with a parent/carer/older sibling)In the workshop, participants will be able to talk, participate and engage with hands-on art:· About local history, asking, 'What do you know about the history of your home?'· With a 'Look and Identify' and 'Touch and Make Up Stories' section using the Cabinet of Curiosities· Practical art session - 'Making your Map' 'Walking like a Tortoise' is a mixed media art exhibition about Granton, on the northern edge of Edinburgh. Like many parts of the city, the Granton boundary has changed over the years, and there are many ways to define its reach. Using maps of the area from 1828 to the present day, the different borders were explored and walked. Tamsin Grainger, walking artist, has lived in Granton for 15 years and has extensive experience in the Community Arts in Edinburgh. She was Dance Artist in Residence (1989-92) and is currently the Granton Waterfront Heritage Programme Development Worker. This exhibition was first shown at the Granton:hub (Madelvic House) in 2023. This perambulatory research was made slowly and mindfully, allowing time for relaxed conversations with other local people who were born in Scotland or who have moved into the area from countries such as the Ukraine and Mumbai. Portraits of children, adults of different ages, and other than human inhabitants (plants, insects etc) were made. New maps, textiles and sound art were created in response to these walks which were taken over a year-long period. Visual and audio stories about local and community history were crafted and are embedded in this exhibition which will both inform and engage audiences from other parts of the city. It aims to prompt an appreciation and connection with the nature of the places where we live. This exhibition addresses post-industrial landscapes, ecological and climate change issues, and multi-cultural participation. See also workshop for adults 18th September 6.30-7.30pm
