Topic: #FlourishingSpaces 2024 TLDR Please join us to explore how we might enable or create #FlourishingSpaces within the organisations and systems we work in. We are inviting clinicians, students, arts for health consultants and therapists, patients, artists, academics, researchers...to explore across hierarchies and liminal spaces, reason and imagination, words and the arts, our bodies and minds... Welcome to our fifth year of flourishing symposia where we bring together health care professionals and students, patients, educators, academics, researchers, artists, therapists and others who are interested in the field of flourishing in healthcare and medicine.This year we are exploring #FlourishingSpaces.We are living in VUCA (Volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) times and face multiple points of alienation e.g. disconnection with ourselves, each other, meaningful work and the environment. We suffer from disengagement, burnout, moral injury and mental health challenges.Responses to these challenging times has often been a focus on resilience, which risks an individualistic and competency approach to wellbeing, resulting in shame if we are not ‘strong’. Social inequity as a barrier to resilience may also be overlooked e.g. see the <a href="" title="" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">brief resilience scale</a> measuring how good we are at bouncing back without considering the impact of challenges and injusticies people might be living through.Where instead organisations consider flourishing, this is sometimes seen as 'happiness' or all parts of our lives being good which engenders similar issues to resilience e.g. pressure to be happy and the lack of recognition of social inequity creating barriers to flourishing.The #FlourishingSpaces team have been exploring flourishing more as a verb (Willen et al, 2022), a way of travelling even through difficult times. Enabling voice and exploration of lived experience through the arts, flattening hierarchy and promoting curiosity across the divides enables rich spaces for growth and learning.
