Othello De’Souza-Hartley invites you to a calming afternoon of art and meditation.

Join us for a meditative drawing session led by artist Othello De'Souza-Hartley, designed to help participants connect with their inner creativity through mindfulness techniques.De'Souza-Hartley, known for his exploration of meditation and Eastern philosophy, seamlessly integrates these disciplines into his art practice. This two hour session will combine the calming practice of meditation with the creative freedom of drawing, aiming to relax and focus the mind through self-expression and mindfulness. At the end of the drawing session, participants will engage in an audience-led conversation with Othello, providing an opportunity to delve deeper into his unique approach and artistic style.Session Outline:Introduction and Meditation:<ul><li>The session will begin with a guided meditation to centre and ground participants.</li></ul>Meditative Drawing Exercise (40 minutes):<ul><li>Othello will lead a 40-minute meditative drawing exercise.</li><li>Participants will draw in a state of calmness to music, allowing their thoughts to flow freely onto paper.</li><li>This practice emphasises the present moment, encouraging self-expression without the constraints of right or wrong.</li><li>Paper and charcoal will be provided for all participants.</li></ul>Conversation<ul><li>Following the drawing exercise, there will be a conversation with Othello.</li><li>The discussion will be led by questions from the audience to gain an insight into Othello’s practice.</li></ul>This session is designed for anyone looking to connect with their inner creativity and mindfulness. No prior drawing or meditation experience is necessary. Come with an open mind and a willingness to explore the depths of your self-expression.OTHELLO DE'SOUZA-HARTLEYOthello De’Souza-Hartley is a London-based mixed media artist who explores aspects of human expression in contemporary society. The paintings celebrate the interplay of inner growth and outer imperfection, honouring the resilience, beauty and history embedded in our bodies and the spaces we inhabit. They are an invitation to search and find beauty in every day and appreciate the fallible journey of life. De’Souza-Hartley merges personal experience into visual investigations of prevailing quandaries and contradictions by applying minimal gestures to maximum effect. Working predominantly in photography, moving images, drawing, performance, and painting, the human body is at the core of his practice, either directly as a subject or indirectly, via the marks and layers applied to canvas. Inspired equally by the subjective gaze of classical paintings and notions of non-duality in Eastern philosophy, by the geometry and texture of Modern architecture and improvisation in experimental music or contemporary dance, De’Souza-Hartley’s practice is not confined by medium or genre. His Masculinity project has received extensive press coverage and was nominated for Peer to Peer, a curated snapshot of contemporary photography in the UK and China in 2019. His work has been exhibited widely to critical acclaim and is held in private and public collections, including Autograph London. He received an MA in Fine Art from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, in 2011, prior to that studied at Central St Martins, University of the Arts London, and the Royal Drawing School London.Materials will be provided.This session concludes our exhibition 'The Future is Now PT. II : Re/form~ation' running from the 25th of July to the 7th of September. Re/ form - ation" foregrounds the transformative potential of glass, textiles, and found objects, inviting an exploration of how these mediums can transcend their utilitarian purposes to become potent conveyors of cultural narratives and personal histories. The exhibition challenges conventional boundaries, presenting a sophisticated dialogue on the materiality of art and its capacity to reflect and shape our understanding of identity, heritage, and memory.
