Joins us for the launch of our new exhibition, showcasing projects from Anfield and Garston!

The Flowers Still Grow brings together a series of projects that showcase long-term collaborations between photographers, creative writers, and local communities in Anfield and Garston. Each project celebrates the people who make up these communities whilst reflecting their concerns, experiences, and aspirations of the society around them.We'll have music from DJ Jess Doyle, who has been spinning the decks for over a decade playing in bars across Liverpool! Expect an eclectic mix of grooves as she likes to explore music from across the globe.We live in uncertain times around the world today, and the exhibition represents how multiple voices have explored these concerns within their own local context. Some projects focus on the inevitability and concerns of redevelopment of suburban landscapes, and the impact of issues like austerity and the Covid pandemic have had on people living and working here in the UK. Others focus on the need for more opportunities and spaces for communities to come together to tackle issues of loneliness, poor mental health and something we all deserve: the right to be creative and play.The projects are the result of two year creative residencies commissioned by Open Eye Gallery and Culture Liverpool.Liz Wewiora, Open Eye Gallery’s Head of Social Practice, said: “Open Eye Gallery has been working in collaboration with artists and communities to explore how photography can act as a tool to amplify often hidden voices in our society for the past 8 years. The voices in this particular exhibition range from 7-year-olds to people in their 80s; people who live down the road and people who have travelled a long way to be here. It has been a pleasure to work with the photographers, both established and recent graduates, over the past two years to realise these projects. They are a testament to the power of community spirit, collaborative work with our community partners and, of course, creativity.”The People of Anfield is an artistic project engaging local people of all backgrounds and ages to share conversations and ideas about the Anfield area – past, present and future. The project has been developed and delivered by photographer Emma Case and writer Pauline Rowe through photography, writing and discussion.Miriam Flüchter is a socially engaged artist who has been working with communities in Garston through a two-year artist residency. Childhood is a Garden offers a multi-dimensional view of Garston, aiming to paint a picture of the area that looks beyond the here and now, into the past and future, questioning what we have lost and what we wish for.Next Up… is our annual graduate showcase of work from the MA in Socially Engaged Photography course at the University of Salford. Open Eye Gallery has been jointly running this unique postgraduate course since 2018, and the programme supports students to explore the power of photography when working with real communities to co-author meaningful culture. The exhibition features work by three early career photographers from our 2023 graduates.Social Lens: Celebrating Creative Collaborations (Exterior Wall)Exterior wall will present a celebration of the collaborative projects we have produced over the past 8 years. We have co-commissioned projects with partners across the health, cultural, environmental, charity, youth and social justice sectors, to name but a few, believing working in partnership with other sectors brings a strength in building knowledge and understanding.The works on display on our exterior wall gallery highlight the power of representation which can develop when the expertise of photographers comes together with the expertise of people and their lived experiences. 🌿 Life Beyond Diagnosis. A collaboration between Tadhg Devlin and the SURF Dementia group with Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. The participants created photo stories to break the stigma associated with dementia, and reflect their lives as individuals, not as a condition. 🌿 The Life Rooms The Life Rooms provide free, short courses to enable people to be more active in their own health and support wellbeing – including photography courses with Open Eye Gallery! 🌿 Home Grown Knowledge / Grow to Eat Throughout 2023, Open Eye Gallery worked with RHS, cultural partners (Street Level Photoworks, Q Gardens, Strand Community Hub and Petrus Incredible Edibles Rochdale) and socially engaged photographers Gwen Riley-Jones and Coulson and Tennant to encourage the gardening communities to tell their gardening and growing story through photography. 🌿 Positive Changes. Sefton Youth Voice, New Beginnings group and Colin McPherson. The project brought young people from across the Sefton borough together to create photo stories reflecting on their identity, interests and lives. 🌿 Transformative Moments Stephanie Wynne and women from Wirral Change wirralchange (an outreach centre for disadvantaged Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities) came together to mark and celebrate the critical point in history when some British women achieved the vote. 🌿 Transformative MomentsOpen Eye Hub Building connections to support local creativity and increase community participation through photography in Wigan &amp; Leigh.Full details: https://openeye.org.uk/whatson/flowers-still-grow/
