In this ECR Workshop, Dr Carlos Lo will discuss the special cross-border funeral economy: constructing identity among Chinese in Macao.

After November 1949, the Chinese Communist regime took over the Guangdong cities and villages around Macau, and the Guangdong government subsequently began to restrict the movement of people at the border crossings between Macau and Zhuhai. Apart from a few people engaged in the trade of agricultural products and franchised businesses, neither Macau nor Zhuhai residents could cross the border at will. This new measure disrupted the previous pattern of cross-border trade and cross-border funerals.Since the founding of the city in the mid-16th century, Macao residents, especially Chinese, have had the custom of being buried north of the border. Under Portuguese colonial rule, Chinese people were long forbidden to be buried in Macao. This also led to the establishment of the Macao Public Cemetery by Macao charities outside the border at the end of the 19th century.After 1949, the Qingming Festival became the special holiday for Macao Chinese residents to return to mainland China legally with a permit. Each year, tens of thousands of Macanese residents passed through the border crossing to return to their ancestral homes to pay their respects, providing business opportunities for Zhuhai during the planned economy era. At the same time, this special form of restricted border crossing also helped to shape the identity of the Macao Chinese.
