This will be the fourth Surya Namaskara Sadhana I have led since September 2023 and I can now affirm with confidence that this is one of the most powerful practices of conscious activity and discipline of the mind and body to serve the soul. A 30 day container where we retreat to the inner sanctum (sacred, holy place) of the heart through reverent honour of the Sun.A regular daily practice of yoga, meditation and related exercises is called Sadhana. Sadhana keeps the mind clear to accurately guide our actions. There is much prana (energy) in the early morning hours, and the body rhythms are more set to support physical cleansing than during the rest of the day.As we move with the cycles of the Earth and her seasons, I find it more neccesary each year to maintain a stong connection to the Sun as we approach the end of Summer and prepare once more for the Equinox, ready to embrace the blazing colours of Autumn with a renewed sense of gratitude, willpower and clarity.It is essential to remind ourselves of the light and warmth of our great star, what it heralds and to give thanks for it's abiding presence. Through movement, sound and prayer we shall honour the Sun and his frequency of highest spiritual truth.My life dramatically transformed after committing to this practice. My auto immune symptoms disappeared, I had boundless energy like never before, my relationships and work projects flourished, creativity was at an all time high and I felt a deep connection to the Earth, the Sun and the Ethers.Surya Namaskar is a well known and vital technique within the yogic repertoire. Its versatility and application make it one of the most useful methods to induce a healthy, vigorous, active life and at the same time prepare for spiritual awakening and the resultant expansion of awareness.This is a sacred practice handed down from the sages of Vedic times. Surya means ’sun’ and Namaskara means ’salutation’. Salutation to the sun, can be seen as a form of worship of the sun, and all that it represents on the micro and macrocosmic levels.In yogic terms this indicates that the practice awakens the solar aspects of an individuals nature and releases this vital energy for the development of higher awareness.Moving, breathing and sounding in complete devotion, honour and worship of what sustains us is a prayer in action and tribute to the source of creation and life.Surya Namaskar is composed of the three elements of form, energy and rhythm. The 12 postures create the physical matrix around which the the form of the practice is woven. These postures generate prana, the subtle energy which activates the psychic body.Their performance is a steady, rhythmic sequence that reflects the rhythms of the universe, such as the 24 hrs of the day, the 12 zodiac phases of the year and the biorhythms of our own body.The rhythmic superimposition of this form and energy on our present body-mind complex is the transforming force which generates the nucleus of a fuller and more active life and a greater appreciation of the richness of the world we live in.Every year the sun passes through the twelve different phases, known as the signs of the zodiac in Western astrology, and as the ‘rashis’ in Hindu astrology. According to Hindu astrology each rashi has specific attributes or moods, and in each of these twelve moods the sun is given a different name. These twelve names comprise the twelve sun mantras, which are to be mentally or verbally repeated in their respective order in conjunction with the twelve movements of Surya Namaskara.These sun mantras are not merely names of the sun, every syllable contained within them is the vehicle of a basic eternal energy (shakti) represented by the sun itself.By repetition and concentration on these mantras, the whole mental structure will be benefited and uplifted.This incredibly powerful practice acts to rebalance the energies of mind and body depending on how we perform it.
