Despite entering university wit an interest in volcanic activity (following an expedition to Iceland), the undergraduate training at Imperial College provided an opportunity to develop an abiding interest in microfossils. Since that change in the 1960's, the following 50 + years has developed this interest in the role of "problem solving" using microfossils. While some of these "problems" have been the usual biostratigraphic work, some of them have involved multi-million pound projects trying to build structures like the Channel Tunnel, the Thames Barrier, some motorways and other engineering challenges. Oilfield work, inclduing directional drilling in chalk-based fields in the North Sea Basin and giant fields in the Middle East, have also proved challenging. In recent times, microfossils have been used to determine the volcanic history of Montserrat, as well as changes in ocean acidification.

The Bath Geological Society was founded in 1970 and serves the interests of amateur and professional geologists alike. The Society meets at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institute on Queens Square on the first Thursday of the month. A series of lectures covering all, spects of geology are held 10 times per year. A series of field trips is also offered. We have around 55 enthusiastic members. A monthly newsletter is written by members covering topics such as unusual rocks, minerals or fossils found on field trips, reminiscences and short research articles. An annual electronic Journal is produced by members. The Society welcomes new members and annual fees are £30.00 or £15.00 for students.
