A Midsummer Night’s Dream has long been revered as one of Shakespeare’s most loved comedies. However, beneath the poetry lies a world of unpredictable and carnal desire, where lovers are interchangeable and attraction is propelled not by truth, but by impulse, projection, and power.
The Polish critic Jan Kott saw A Midsummer Night’s Dream as “the most erotic of Shakespeare’s plays”, but he saw this as a dark force: “in no other comedy or tragedy of his, except Troilus and Cressida, is the eroticism expressed so brutally."
