The impact of COVID-19 on business, culture and society offer a huge opportunity for public relations, but are practitioners ready to grab the opportunity?Organisations focused on profit as a primary goal have been caught out by COVID-19. A sustainable recovery will need to focus on profit, people and the planet. But this shift creates a tension for PR: recessions and recovery typically focus management on assets and cashflow. There has already been a rapid shift to digital and mobile. That is likely to continue, impacting outdoor, experiential, events, meetings and print. Organisations need to own their own media to engage with stakeholders. We’ll see an investment in owned media and social channels.The profession has rapidly shifted to virtual working since March. Practitioners are either working flat out or furloughed. Both have mental health implications. She joined the University from Leeds Beckett University where she was Director of the Centre for Public Relations Studies, an internationally recognised research centre and think tank on public relations and communication. She was Chair of the Global Alliance and on its Board until 2017.Stephen Waddington, Managing Partner, Wadds Inc, and Visiting Professor, Newcastle UniversityStephen Waddington is a business advisor and troubleshooter who helps organisations with planning, strategic decision making and execution. He is the author of the UK’s leading blog on marketing, media and communication, and has written numerous books on marketing and PR. He is an external examiner for the CIPR and a Visiting Professor at Newcastle University. ***About iprovisionFor more than 50 years iprovision has been making a meaningful difference to the lives of CIPR members and their families who have fallen on tough times, offering advice and financial assistance during periods of ill health, unemployment or low income , bereavement, relationship difficulties, addiction and other crises. From grants to help with care and respite costs, iprovision has helped many members to turn difficult situations around. The current coronavirus crisis is seeing an upsurge in CIPR members contacting iprovision and looking for support. Solo practitioners, used to working from home, suddenly find themselves needing to deliver home schooling while clients drop off and income falls through the floor. Agency staff suffer redundancy as businesses scale back, and – welcome though it is – government support cannot fill all the gaps. Iprovision can provide both practical and financial support. Many members have never before been in the position of looking for support – so as well as looking at what financial support iprovision can provide they also help them through the maze to uncover the benefits they are entitled to, and also to get help from other specialist sources.This present crisis is a worrying time for many in our industry and many members have been affected. As a charity all of iprovision&#x27;s income is derived from voluntary donations, the vast majority of which have come from CIPR members past and present.iprovision needs our support more than ever and CIPR Scotland are donating all the funds form this webinar to support iprovision.
