Scheme Description

The A45/A46 Tollbar End Improvement Scheme was focussed around upgrading the key strategic link on the trunk road network to the south of Coventry which facilitates vehicle movements between the M40, M6, M1, M45 and M69 motorways and links London, Birmingham, Coventry and Leicester.

Located to the south of Coventry, between Stivichall and Tollbar End Junctions, the A45/A46 Tollbar Scheme improvement scheme included:

- Asymmetrically widening the mainline of the A45 Stonebridge Highway from two to three lanes in both directions and providing a concrete step barrier in the central reserve along the whole length of the scheme.

- Enlarging the roundabout at the Tollbar End Junction and constructing an underpass to link the A45 Stonebridge Highway to the A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass.

- Building a new signalised junction between Siskin Drive and Rowley Road, and providing gantries on the A46 Kenilworth Bypass.

Project Objectives

- Improve economic efficiency by reducing congestion and improving the reliability of journey times

- Improve safety for road users, and particularly pedestrians and cyclists, on the Stonebridge Highway, Stivichall and Tollbar junctions and local roads

- Integrate the A45/A46 with national, regional and local plans and policies together with wider land use considerations, in particular by providing improved access and capacity for the regeneration of South Coventry

- Have a minimal neutral impact on the natural and built environment.

- Suit the requirements of ongoing maintenance, minimise whole life costs and maximise value for money

Project Outcomes

Construction of the A45/A46 Tollbar End Improvement Scheme commenced in August 2013 and was open to traffic with benefit realised December 2016 and was completed in February 2017.
