Celebrating the release of the new paperback edition of this seminal book, Jon reflects on the various topic's, themes, influences and the creative process of researching and writing the book and co-curating the Rylands current special exhibition The Secret Public: LGBTQ Pop 1955 - 1985.

About the speakers

Author and broadcaster Emma Warren was a founding contributor to mid-‘90s Manchester dance music magazine Jockey Slut. She is the author of Guardian book of the year 'Dance Your Way Home' (Faber, 2023), and Mojo book of the year 'Make Some Space' (Sweet Machine, 2019). She has run workshops around her pamphlet 'Document Your Culture: A Manual' across the UK and Northern Ireland. Her cultural history, 'Up The Youth Club', will be published by Faber in September 2025.

Jon Savage is an author, archivist, film writer and professor. His books include England's Dreaming: Sex Pistols and Punk Rock, 1966: The Year The Decade Exploded, Teenage: The Creation of Youth 1975-1945, and The Secret Public: How LGBTQ Performers Shaped Popular Culture 1955-1979. His films include Teenage, Joy Division, the award-winning BBC Arena documentary The Brian Epstein Story. He is Professor of Popular Culture at the British Pop Archive, the John Rylands Library, University of Manchester.
