The Quaker Meeting House

This event, in partnership with <a href="https://lighthousebookshop.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lighthouse Books</a>, is for anyone interested in alternatives to punishment and the abolition of carceral practices . All are welcome!, including those who are just starting to read about abolition and those who are already undertaking abolitionist and transformative justice practices in their community. All are welcome to this workshop!The workshop is centred around a number of texts about prison, police, and border abolition, in both the Scottish context and more widely. For example, we’ll read excerpts and discuss with Martha O’Carroll her work on <a href="https://www.sccjr.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Is-there-Anybody-Out-There.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">prison activism and abolition in Scotland 1972-1987</a>, and have a creative writing workshop with Phil Crockett Thomas based on some of the work in their edited collection <a href="https://abolitionscifi.org/project-resources/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Abolition Science Fiction</a>. We are also excited to welcome activist and journalist <a href="https://victorialaw.net" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Victoria Law</a> who will share excerpts of her writing on abolition practices in the U.S. All participants will be sent written excerpts before the event. You are invited to read them ahead of time or hear them read in the workshop.The workshop, including lunch and refreshments, is free. Please let us know any dietary requirements when you register. There are some funds to support travel from outside of Edinburgh and childcare. Please email Kirstin Anderson at k.anderson3@napier.ac.uk to find out more. If you register, and can no longer attend, please let us know as we have a waiting list for the event. Following the workshop, Victoria Law will give a talk in partnership with Lighthouse Books in the same venue (starting at 18:00). This event is open to the public; please indicate in the workshop registration whether you also intend to stay for the public talk.
