An online, interactive café  focusing on accent biases, where they come from and they can be acknowledged and avoided.

This online café focuses on accent biases, where they come from and they can be acknowledged and avoided. The café includes an interactive accent bias experiment, a lightning talk on accent prejudice and a guided discussion session. Come along if you have an interest in language, perhaps you speak more than one language or a non-standard dialect or just want to learn more about how speakers might be judged on how they sound.We hope that participants will learn about what it means to be bilingual and what it means to have an accent. The café is an opportunity to reflect on accent biases, hear from others about their experiences and think of ways to combat such biases and foster inclusivity – at work, school, college, home, in the wider community.This event is organised by Dr Ella Jeffries, Linguistics lecturer at the University of Essex, and also a member of Bilingualism Matters East of England. It is part of the Being Human Festival, which presents hundreds of free events across the UK and beyond to celebrate and demonstrate the ways in which the humanities inspire and enrich our everyday lives, help us to understand ourselves, our relationships with others, and the challenges we face in a changing world.
