Accessible Interactive Technologies: with Dr Asha Ward

Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is a specialist teaching and research institute for the study of creative arts, located in Poole.AUB's Innovation Studio is a unique resource for businesses and practitioners. The Innovation Studio operates as a lab for creative technologies, a space for start-ups and regional enterprises, and a hub for industry engagement, with a focus on collaboration, high skills development, entrepreneurship, research, and prototyping.The studio combines flexible workspaces with access to state-of-the-art digital and physical equipment for creative design and manufacturing, as well as expertise and a wealth of knowledge from AUB’s professional and technical staff and academic practitioners.

A﻿bout this eventAsha's research focuses on using participatory design methods to create bespoke technology-based solutions with diverse participants. With a background in music and audio technology these solutions typically involve translating gestures into sounds. Asha uses the lived experience and real-world requirements of her participants to inform her designs - with the ultimate aim of breaking down barriers to access in music-making. Asha uses an unconventional approach to create interactive music systems using different types of sensors and open-source microprocessors.This talk will provide contextual background to why these systems are needed and cover the co-creative development process. The hardware and software from the systems will be showcased as well as some of the findings. The presentation will underpin some of the engineering behind the outputs of the research with key philosophies of current music technologies.T﻿his event will take place in AUB's Innovation Studio.What are AUB Open lectures?The AUB Open lectures are a series of events sharing specialist knowledge on topics of design thinking and creative practice. The lectures support the university's commitment to its civic agenda and since 2019, have delivered to over 1,000 people locally and internationally. Prior to joining the Innovation Studio full-time in 2022, Asha worked as a Research Fellow at Southampton University and Associate Lecturer, Solent University.
