Across_Dance: Elements Abstracted

These events are held as a collaboration between Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company - The Drishtikon Dance Foundation (India) and the Aakash Odedra Company (UK). The mission of this collaboration is to explore the worlds elements through the art forms of Kathak and Contemporary Dance. Lead by two world leading experts in their fields, these practical and theoretical explorations aim to widen participants and observers ways of thinking about performance and the choreographic process.Aditi Mangaldas is a leading dancer and choreographer in the classical Indian dance form of Kathak. With extensive training under the leading gurus of Kathak, Shrimati Kumudini Lakhia and Pandit Birju Maharaj. Aditi is today recognised for her artistry, technique, eloquence and characteristic energy that mark every performance. Besides dancing and choreographing classical productions, both solo and group, she has broken new ground by using her knowledge and experience of Kathak as a springboard to evolve a contemporary dance vocabulary, infused with the spirit of the classical.Aakash Odedra Company was founded in Leicester in 2011 by Anand Bhatt and Aakash Odedra. Named after our Artistic Director Aakash Odedra, a choreographer and one of the most talented British South Asian dancers. Born in Birmingham, Aakash trained in bharatanatyam and kathak, then moved to India as a student of the renowned Bollywood choreographer Shiamak Davar. Aakash is a globally recognised and award winning artist, he has performed over 300 full length performances in 40 countries.

Each session is split in two, through kathak and contemporary dance you will explore one of the five elements: fire, water, earth, wind and ether. This series of workshops has been created to explore professional practice across these two different dance forms through teaching and sharing. Both Aakash and Aditi will lead the sessions at an intermediate level, with a focus on structure and to re-imagine your approach to movement.The fifth and final workshop will explore the intangible element of ether, where all four elements are combined; the senses meet across space and time and where connection is experienced. With a focus on enrichment, this session goes beyond matter and explores feelings and sensations through discussions, interactions and Q &amp; A. “In observation your mind is more open” – Aditi MangaldasIf you’re trained in kathak or contemporary dance join us to experiment with, and explore the possibilities of movement you have yet to discover. Through participation and observation you can expand your understanding of dance. For some, this will be an experimental exploration, please keep in mind that they may be trying new movement vocabulary for the first time or observing the process of the body moulding to the elements in a different way.Additional movement content through a series of short exercises will support each workshop. You will receive a short film ahead of each session to experiment with.“Don’t undervalue active observation” – Aakash OdedraTERMS &amp; CONDITIONS• You may not be able to attend the live session if you are more than 30 minutes late.• Aakash Odedra Company and Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company - The Drishtikon Dance Foundation will not be held responsible for any internet connectivity issues you experience during the course of the live stream.
