Active Bystander Community (ABC) Workshop

The Hollie Gazzard Trust was created following the murder of 20-year-old Hollie Gazzard in 2014 by an ex-partner. The Hollie Gazzard Trust helps reduce domestic violence through creating and delivering programmes on domestic abuse and promoting healthy relationships to schools, colleges and universities.In addition, it funds hairdressing training for young people who may not otherwise have the funds to study – Hollie was passionate about hairdressing and HGT enables others to follow their dream.The Hollie Gazzard Trust also campaigns to reduce anti-social behaviour and knife crime.The ultimate aim of the Trust is to positively change the lives of young people through partnerships in communities, as well as working alongside other charities and professional agencies.HGT was set up by Hollie’s parents, Nick and Mandy, and her sister Chloe.Registered Charity No. 1156804

Cheltenham Town Football Club

A 6-hour programme designed for the general public to learn more about domestic abuse, and how they can help combat it by learning skills to intervene as a positive bystander. This course will be delivered in two 3 hour sessions. and is limited to 20 people. Monday 25th November 2019 6pm to 9pm ANDMonday 2nd December 2019 6pm to 9pm. You will be required to attend BOTH sessions. When bystanders intervene, for example by signaling their disapproval of a behaviour, the wrongdoer receives this message – and so do other people around them. Active Bystander Communities works with participants in a positive and empowering way to think about scenarios and helpful behaviours which could help make a difference and make the community safer for everyone.We cover the definition of a bystander and the types of bystander outlining how a bystander can intervene to stop events before they happen or while they are happening. We look at the 4 stages of intervention and the reasons why individual’s do not intervene including social psychological theory and social norms theory.An abusive relationship does not necessarily involve physical violence. Unfortunately, in many circumstances it does. Non-violent abuse is prevalent and identified as coercive control - the control of a person’s emotions, finances, whereabouts and even isolation from friends and family. For all types of domestic abuse there are patterns of behaviour to look out for and different ways of getting involved as a bystander. For many, the instant feeling is to ‘’rescue’’ the victim by confronting the abuser or trying to bring the relationship to an end. Too often though this is not the safest method.Active Bystander Communities can be delivered to anyone. Not necessarily for victims of domestic abuse, nor do you have to know someone who is suffering. The course is designed to give anyone the tools to provide emotional and practical support to a friend, relative, colleague, neighbour who may suffer domestic abuse. Giving skills for life.Attendees should however, consider that domestic abuse is a sensitive topic and they might find some of the content distressing.This is a FREE workshop organised and run by Nick Gazzard, founder of the Hollie Gazzard Trust.
