Active Bystander Training

Overview

Learn how to step in and help prevent harm in your work place or community at our Active Bystander Training event!

West Yorkshire Police within the Bradford District are offering a free Active Bystander session.

Our Active Bystander Sessions are aimed to promote conversations around bystandership and how we can help and support people within the community or your workplace.

We will provide attendees with the knowledge and the tools to safely support or challenge others in challening situations.

You will learn how you can empower others to step up or ask for help from allies or other services including the Police.

This in-person event will be held at Javelin House Police Station and is open to anyone interested in attending.

Parking is available at the Police Station car park or at Morrisons over the road, free of charge with no time restrictions.

Please note: There is no disability access to the training room which is on the 2nd floor it is only accessible via steps.

Don't miss this opportunity to make a positive impact in your community or workplace !

The session takes around 2 hours in total, is interactive and will enable attendees to take an active part in gaining some further knowledge around being an ‘Active Bystander’.

The topics covered include:

  • Define the role of a bystandership in the prevention of harm and abuse
  • Discuss inhibitors that prevent bystander action.
  • Identify a range of tools that can be used to safely support and challenge others.
  • Practice the use of bystander tools.
  • Discuss ways to support individuals that may disclose abuse

We are all bystanders, who witness events unfolding around us. Sometimes we recognise events as being problematic. When this happens, we decide to do or say something and become an active bystander (either in the moment or at a later stage) or to simply let it go and remain a passive bystander. Social norms can be shifted to challenge behaviours by empowering people to become active rather than passive bystanders.

This opportunity also supports the #JogOn Campaign.

Information and support will also be given arround the 'Ask for Angela' campaign. Ask for Angela is a national scheme that helps anyone who is feeling vulnerable on a night out to get the support they need. We will provide you with information about how the scheme works and how you can use it.
