A joined-up approach to APVA 
Dame Vera Baird DBE QC – Northumbria Office for Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) and Patron of Respect Dame Vera will be chairing the morning session of this event. She will also be presenting on the work that Northumbria OPCC in association with Respect are carrying out across 6 local authorities in the Northumbria Police force area. This initiative, addressing adolescent to parent violence and abuse (APVA), includes training to relevant professionals - from police, to safeguarding, to youth justice - with the aim of providing a joined-up response from callout right through to the end of the intervention.
 Case studies from families who have experienced and addressed APVA This presentation will walk through the journey of service users going through an APVA programme with the use of real case studies. It will cover the families’ experiences for help seeking; the support through the programme; what it was like to attend a programme alongside their child; and the post-programme results within the family home. 
The case studies will be from families who have gone through Gateshead Early Help Service.
 Working with young people with ASD and ADHD
Rosie Creer – Young People’s Services Manager, Respond Most of us will know that people with autistic presentations and diagnoses of ADHD can find particular situations overwhelming, which can lead to them finding it more difficult to self-regulate and resolve conflict.  Understanding the underlying experiences of this group of young people will inform how interventions might therefore differ from those managing similar aggression in neuro-typical teens. The presentation will explore the additional impact of early developmental trauma and compounded experiences of exclusion on a young person’s fragile sense of self.
 
Children who kill parents
Dr Hannah Bows – Assistant Professor in Criminal Law - Durham Law School Hannah Bows will be speaking about where parricide meets eldercide: an analysis of child to parent/grandparent homicides in the UK.
 WORKSHOPS:
Carole Williams &amp; Cathy Press – Who’s In Charge? ‘Who’s in Charge?’ is a 9 week child to parent violence (CPV) programme aimed at parents whose children are being abusive or violent toward them or who appear out of parental control.  The structure of the programme consists of 8 two and a half hour sessions with a two-month follow up. The practitioners will go through some of the tools and techniques used in the programme. 
Jane Griffiths – Break 4 Change Break 4 change is a 10-week group programme supporting parents/carers and young people in building healthy relationships. ‘Child to parent abuse is any behaviour used by a young person to control, dominate, or coerce parents. It is intended to threaten and intimidate and puts the family at risk’. B4C ©. This interactive workshop will look at the programme and how it is implemented and explore tools and strategies used when working with families impacted by child to parent abuse. 
Tracey Bayliss – Swindon Borough Council | Restorative Youth Services work with young people on the autistic spectrum Swindon Borough Council’s service running the Respect Young People’s Programme saw a lot of children and young people passing through their services had an autism spectrum condition (ASC). To address this need they developed their approach and Tracey will share some of the strategies they employed in order to work with this client group. This workshop will also explore how to implement such work in a landscape where resources may be scarce. 
Michelle Phillips – SafeLives and Young People’s IDVAs This workshop will look at what MARAC data and Young People’s IDVAs can tell us about violence in young people’s relationships. 
Debbie Cooper – Team Manager, Gateshead Early Help Service | Setting up a programme tackling APVA embedded within a local authority This interactive workshop will cover the opportunities and challenges of setting up an APVA service within a local authority. It will cover:

 Dr Wendy Thorley | Let’s Talk About: Children with challenging, violent or aggressive behaviour This workshop will consider why children display challenging, violent or aggressive behaviours and what works and what doesn't in seeking to support these children and young people at home or in a professional capacity. This workshop will provide new information developed from research published in July 2018 from over 538 families. The relationship between childhood adversity and/ or special educational needs and disability for children who present challenging, violent or aggressive behaviour will be highlighted.
