AI Ethics &amp; Society is excited to announce the 2024 symposium 'AI as the Broken Machine', sponsored by <a href="https://efi.ed.ac.uk/" title="https://efi.ed.ac.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Edinburgh Futures Institute</a>, the <a href="https://algorithmicsocieties.org/about/" title="https://algorithmicsocieties.org/about/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Algorithmic Societies</a> research group at Durham University, the <a href="https://www.technomoralfutures.uk/" title="https://www.technomoralfutures.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre for Technomoral Futures</a>, and the <a href="https://www.sps.ed.ac.uk/research/research-themes/data-digital" title="https://www.sps.ed.ac.uk/research/research-themes/data-digital" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">CAHSS Data and Digital Research Theme</a>.The symposium will explore brokenness, care, and repair in the age of AI, offering perspectives on the inclusion of marginalised epistemologies and expertise, modes of refusal and methods to critically interrogate emerging technologies such as generative AI.Our three panels address themes of margins, data patchwork and justice; error, uncertainty and categorisation; and care, repair and craft. Invited Keynote Speaker: Prof. <a href="https://www.durham.ac.uk/staff/louise-amoore/" title="https://www.durham.ac.uk/staff/louise-amoore/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Louise Amoore</a> (Durham University)Invited panellists include: Alex Taylor (University of Edinburgh), Shannon Vallor (University of Edinburgh), Anne Lee Steele (Alan Turing Institute), Alex Campolo (Durham University), Cindy Lin (Pennsylvania State University), Ben Jacobsen (Durham University),Natassa Philimonos (University of Edinburgh), Morgan Currie (University of Edinburgh), and Srravya Chandhiramowuli (University of Edinburgh). The symposium is free to attend and will include a catered lunch, tea, coffee and pastries.
