AI Data Centres - Their Complexity and Environmental Impact
John Butler from u3a Let's Talk Tech will look at the resources these mega data centres consume in order to facilitate the growth of AI.
The u3a Let’s Talk Tech team holds twice monthly 90 minute long Lunchtime Zoom Drop-in Sessions. They are at 1pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month.
Session outline
In a video-enabled presentation, John will look at the resources that these mega data centres consume in order to facilitate the growth of AI, and take a peek inside one to see just how complex they are to operate and maintain at all times of the year.
The AI revolution is current adding to our environmental woes, as it exacerbates the Greenhouse Gas Emissions from the added electricity generation capacity required, which companies like Microsoft & Google freely admit.
With the UK’s issues around generating clean reliable power and the expansion of power distribution networks to meet demand, and the water shortages caused by climate change, summer droughts and our lack of reservoirs, there is concern about the voracious consumption by AI Data Centres of our natural resources and the added electricity generation capacity needed.
This event is for u3a members only.
