Event description

Description

Machine Intelligence Garage is coming to Newcastle!

Join us for our next meetup, where we will delve into how local companies and initiatives have implemented AI in their workflows. This meetup provides a great opportunity to see real-world applications of AI; from understanding pressing societal problems to financial security to interpreting the information in maps and charts. You’ll have the chance to meet experts from DWP-Digital, Machine-Delta/Caspian, and Gavurin.

We will delve into examples of purpose-built data platforms that apply machine learning to understand data in many different domains.

The meetup will enable you to learn how companies use AI to;

  • Shape decision making for social strategy
  • Automate financial quality assurance to stop money laundering
  • Understand data from charts, maps and regional data sources

Our talks are from a range of companies, but all are pioneers in developing novel and exciting technology tools to solve multi-layer data problems.

Who should attend?

Register to attend if you are:

  • A company developing AI-enabled products
  • A researcher in the field of AI
  • A data scientist
  • Interested in AI

Why attend?

Machine learning is becoming a standard part of the business lexicon, but it is not always clear how companies are incorporating ML into their products and services. This meetup provides the opportunity to meet some Newcastle based companies who have already implemented ML to solve some of the problems in their businesses.

DWP Digital: Pablo Suau

Pablo Suau has always been passionate about Machine Learning. After completing a PhD. in the subject and spending his first professional years as a university lecturer, he transitioned to a data science career. He has experience in designing, implementing and deploying machine learning models both in the private and public sectors.

DWP Digital is in charge of creating modern, secure and user-centred digital services that deliver for society, through data and user research. The Newcastle data science hub, as part of DWP Digital, has been developing a set of data-driven tools with the aim of improving decision-making for internal users initially focusing on labour market strategists and policymakers. By making use of reusable design and reproducibility-enabling workflows, these products have successfully grabbed the attention of other government teams and non-government organisations.

Caspian: Matt Cranwell

Matt is a Data Scientist at Caspian/Machine Delta. His current work applies a variety of machine learning techniques to augment and automate human decision making in high-risk areas within financial services. Before joining Caspian, Matt completed a PhD in Neuroscience at Newcastle University.

Caspian solutions automate human judgement in complex Financial Crime investigation tasks. Every day within global banks, thousands of human analysts assess critical information, make judgements and take sensitive compliance decisions that must be defensible to regulators. Caspian enables banks to replace many of these analysts with machine intelligence technology that can automatically read, analyse and make judgements as well as the very best human experts. Crucially, the Caspian solutions generate detailed, human-readable rationale’s and an evidence trail to support every judgement made. Caspian works with large global banks to deliver intelligence to combat criminal money laundering, terrorist financing and trafficking.

Gavurin: Paul Miller

Paul Miller founded Gavurin and before that Trends Business Research (TBR). TBR was established as a data-led economic consultancy; Gavurin was established as a data-led software development business. Before TBR, Paul directed the then newly established Newcastle University Business School and was the first director of its part-time MBA programme. Paul started his career in human resource management with a large corporate and became a published academic in that subject.

Gavurin has a wide-ranging portfolio of data-related products and services which enable organisations to be self-sufficient in the production of easily understood and visually impactful data analysis. Headquartered in Newcastle upon Tyne and with offices in central London, Gavurin is a market leader in the provision of data management, data analytics and content reporting capability to organisations across multiple sectors and geographies.
