AI and Smart technologies have recently been at the core of strategies for sustainable development and economic growth of the society. They can play a notable role in societal development through e-governance, e-education, e-health, communication and other sectors. This directly reflects the societal advancement and its relationship with public and private sectors along with the citizens. AI and smart technologies are the main ingredient of the intelligent systems facilitated by the ICT infrastructure using internet of things (IoTs), sensors and networks technologies. This lecture will introduce some of the recent developments in smart technologies that are used for monitoring, security, operation and maintenance of the infrastructure in smart cities and smart villages. Several AI applications and lessons learned from case studies the developing world will be discussed.Professor Keshav Dahal is the director of the Artificial Intelligence, Visual Communication and Networks (AVCN) research institute at the University of the West of Scotland. Prior to this he was with the University of Bradford and the University of Strathclyde. His research interests lie in the areas of applied AI, trust and security modelling in distributed systems, Blockchain technology and scheduling/optimization problems. He has been principal investigator or co-investigators on more than 25 externally funded projects, and supervised over 30 PhD and postdoctoral researchers. He has published over 170 papers in his research fields with award winning publications. He has sat on organizing/program committees of over 60 international conferences. He is the general chair of the IEEE co-sponsored 15th International conference on Software, Knowledge, Information Management and Applications (SKIMA 2023) to be held in Malaysia in 8-10 Dec 2023.
