Alan Hollinghurst

Furedown’s first literary festival will take place on May 10 th 2025 at Mitcham Lane Baptist Church. The festival is the brainchild of a group of local residents with a passion for literature to celebrate the wealth of talent from this corner of south London. Diversity and inclusivity lie at the heart of this inaugural event. Writers hail from a wide range of backgrounds and cover topics ranging from politics and spying to neurodiversity and children’s books. Furzedown Litfest is funded by the Furzedown Community Network and part of Wandsworth Borough of Culture 2025.The events have been made possible by the kind support of the FCN, Mitcham Lane Baptist church, and many volunteers from the community.

Alan Hollinghurst, the author of the Booker Prize–winning The Line of Beauty, discusses his new novel Our Evening in conversation with Dr. Diarmuid Hester.Alan Hollinghurst is an English novelist celebrated for his explorations of gay life and desire. He won the 2004 Booker Prize for The Line of Beauty. His debut novel, The Swimming-Pool Library (1988), was groundbreaking in its frank portrayal of gay relationships. Hollinghurst is regarded as one of Britain’s most important contemporary novelists.Dr. Diarmuid Hester is a writer, cultural historian, and activist known for exploring queer lives and spaces. He teaches at the University of Cambridge and is the author of Nothing Ever Just Disappears.In partnership with Balham Library. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
