About this event

This beginners course is designed for anyone interested in learning how to develop an allotment or vegetable garden during the summer months. No previous knowledge is required, though gardeners who want to develop and share their experience are welcome.

The course will cover the basics of vegetable gardening and will include:

● Basic plant botany and practical implications

● Temperate seasons and implications for gardening

● Growing a range of vegetables and herbs

● Propagation techniques

● Safe tool use and maintenance

● Managing pests & diseases

● Identification and management of weeds

● Bed preparation, soil health and growing media

● Traditional and no-dig methods

● Growing vegetables in raised beds

By the end of the course learners should feel confident with the safe use of tools and ardening techniques. They will be able to identify a number of commonly grown herbs, vegetables and flowers and be familiar.

Special requirements:

Learners should be aware they will be working and moving around in an outdoor, unadapted garden. As such they will need to be aware of the safety implications of working in a

group and outdoors in the UK weather. Any extreme allergies should be discussed with the staff prior to entering the garden. Sturdy boots and appropriate weatherproof clothing will be essential. All tools and plants will be provided.

Eligibility criteria:

Working English is preferable as there will be class discussions and written materials.
