Amplify Marketing Festival 2018

A day to turn up the marketing volume

For the eighth consecutive year, The Marketing Society will be hosting a special day during the Edinburgh Festival to offer our members something a bit different - four fantastic events in one festival day:

  • The Ogilvy Lecture

  • The Badger Debate

  • Pioneering Spirit Challenge: Clients vs Agencies

  • Mad Men & Women Drinks Party

The Ogilvy Lecture
University of Edinburgh Business School, George Square | 1-2pm

This annual lecture is a tribute to David Ogilvy, who went to school in Edinburgh before setting up Ogilvy & Mather New York and developing one of the biggest advertising networks in the world. His books on marketing and advertising are still highly regarded both by academics and practitioners. The David Ogilvy era on Madison Avenue is now celebrated in the Mad Men TV series.

We are thrilled to have Syl Saller and her colleague Grainne Wafer delivering the 2018 Lecture.

Syl is the Chief Marketing Officer at Diageo and president of The Marketing Society. Before Syl was appointed CMO, she was Diageo’s Global Innovation Director, responsible for Diageo’s innovation strategy, including all new product development, launch programmes and R&D worldwide.

Gráinne is Global Brand Director for Baileys at Diageo and responsible for the Baileys brand globally. She is accountable for strategy, commercial and consumer performance & innovation for the Baileys brand, in both developed and emerging markets. Gráinne also is joint lead of Diageo’s Progressive Gender Portrayal programme and is the Diageo representative for the UNstereotype Alliance, a UN and industry wide platform which seeks to eradicate harmful gender-based stereotypes in advertising.

We are also delighted to have Nadja Bellan-White, Executive Partner at Ogilvy, with us to introduce Syl.

Previous lectures have been delivered by Rory Sutherland, MT Rainey, Adam Morgan, Benny Higgins and Ellis Watson.

The Badger Debate
University of Edinburgh Business School, George Square | 2.30-3.30pm

The Badger Debate is named in memory of Kenny Harris. Kenny was one of the great characters in the marketing community and a passionate and champion debater who, with his black and white beard was affectionately known as “The Badger”. Kenny believed that debating was a key skill for marketing professionals who need to make more of an impression in the boardroom especially when challenged by MD’s and FD’s. Kenny was a great supporter of The Marketing Society and was an inspiration to many.

Motion: In today’s world big data is more influential than big ideas.

Chair: Gemma Greaves, Chief Executive, The Marketing Society
Speaking For: Lisl Macdonald and David Roberts, Multiply
Speaking Against: Keli Mitchell, Frame and Mark Gorman, Think Hard

Pioneering Spirit Challenge: Clients v Agencies
University of Edinburgh Business School, George Square | 4-5.30pm

In this client vs agencies event, each team will champion a set of Pioneering Spirit Award ideas and the audience will determine the overall winning idea and more importantly, the winning team.

The Pioneering Spirit Award has been developed using award winning marketing ideas from across the world as a source of inspiration. Over the past 6 years we've assessed inspiring ideas at a programme of events in a range of international cities including Sao Paulo, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Dubai, Austin and Cannes - as well as closer to home in Edinburgh and Glasgow. We also use this initiative to help build a leading global network of marketers with over 400 judges now part of our international panel.

Mad Men & Women Drinks Party
Assembly Club Bar | 5.30pm-7pm

What’s a festival without some social drinks in one of the coolest bars in town? The Mad Men & Women Drinks Party is a who’s who of the industry and a networking event not to be missed.
