Together, we will explore the <a href="https://www.england.nhs.uk/mental-health/advancing-mental-health-equalities/pcref/" title="https://www.england.nhs.uk/mental-health/advancing-mental-health-equalities/pcref/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework</a> (PCREF), reflecting on how it is being experienced, implemented, and lived out in real-world settings. Through an open, facilitated conversation, we will explore the challenges, opportunities, and practical steps needed to build racially equitable mental health care that is centred on community voices, partnership and collective action.What to Expect<ul><li>Discussion of the social and institutional context behind PCREF</li><li>Exploration of its design, co-production, and integration into NHS practices</li><li>Reflection on accountability, patient and carer involvement, and impact measurement</li><li>Engagement with perspectives on advancing anti-racism within the NHS and driving institutional change</li></ul>Whether you're a practitioner, policymaker, researcher, or a lived experience advocate, this session invites meaningful dialogue on equity in mental health. About Rethink Mental Illness: Racial Justice TeamThe Racial Justice Team at Rethink Mental Illness works to embed racial equity across mental health systems, ensuring that lived experience, community voice, and cultural identity are central to change. The team leads national and local initiatives that challenge systemic inequities, influence policy, and strengthen partnerships between communities, services and organisations.Through the rollout of the Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF), the team supports community-based mental health services and VCSEs to translate equity principles into practical action, shaping how care is delivered, how accountability is held, and how trust is rebuilt.Their work spans policy reform, community action, and coproduction, amplifying the expertise of those most affected by racial injustice. At its heart, the team is committed to creating spaces for collective learning and courageous conversation that leads to action, where honesty and hope can coexist.

For this event, graphic facilitation will be provided by Dr Penelope MendonçaDr Penelope Mendonça FRSA is an independent researcher, values-based visual facilitator and artist with 25 years’ experience in UK public and VCSE sectors. Her interests include ethics and visual methods, violence reduction, racial, disability and gender justice. Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, with mixed heritage, Pen has a background in social care (mental health and learning disability), and draws on mental health services herself. She is a member of Survivor’s Against Terror, the Community of Practice for Migrant Victim-Survivors of Domestic Abuse City St George’s, and leads on the arts for NHS 24/7 Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre Programme.
