Event description

Description

In partnership with the Oxford Comics Network, Blackwell's Bookshop Westgate is delighted to host the acclaimed cartoonist and illustrator Tom Gauld to Oxford. Tom will be talking to Alex Fitch about his work, books and graphic novels at our Westgate shop on Tuesday 21st May at 7pm. This is part of the Oxford Comics Network's programme of events.

Tom Gauld

Tom Gauld was born in 1976 and grew up in Aberdeenshire. Tom's comic strips and illustrations appear weekly in The Guardian and New Scientist and regularly in the New Yorker. He is the author of the comic books Goliath, You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack, Mooncop (a New York Times bestseller) and Baking with Kafka (winner of Best Humour Publication at the 2018 Eisner Awards). Gauld lives and works in London and his most recent publication is The Snooty Bookshop.

Alex Fitch

Alex Fitch is the presenter of Panel Borders, the UK’s only monthly broadcast radio show about comics on Resonance FM, the Arts Council station in London. He has been published on the subjects of comics and film by Intellect, Strange Attractor, University Press of Mississippi, and McFarland.

Oxford Comics Network

Comics and graphic narratives, a form long under-recognised by mainstream publishers and academic institutions alike, have in recent years began to receive the critical attention they deserve. They combine drawn and often painted panels with the written word to create a narrative form that is inherently interdisciplinary, demanding the critical approaches from multiple fields, from literary criticism and visual cultures to art theory and architecture, not to mention the significant body of comics criticism that already exists.

The Oxford Comics Network is part of The Oxford Research Centre for the Humanities (TORCH). Making use of TORCH’s interdisciplinary platform, this network, ‘Comics and Graphic Novels: The Politics of Form’, brings students, critics and practitioners from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to explore the power, politics and potential of the comics form.
