An insight into the LFB Fire Engineering Group

The goals of the SFPE Student Chapter of Greater London are to bring together students interested in fire protection engineering based in the city of London, to present fire protection as a rewarding and viable career path, and to promote the industry.We host monthly seminars that span all areas of fire engineering from wildland fires to façade fires to evacuation modeling. We invite people in the industry, firefighters, university academics, and researchers. Our visitors come from all over the world.

<P><STRONG>Abstract</STRONG></P>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Lynsey will talk about the unique role of a fire engineer working for the LFB relating to the life cycle of buildings from the very early design stages through to occupation and potentially demolition. She will explain how the team’s experience and knowledge is used to feed into the process of creating and developing industry guidance and our view on the current fire safety framework within England. As well as providing an overview of the group’s work she will also use case study references to explain and put into context issues that LFB have been highlighting and which have also featured within Dame Judith Hackitt’s independent review into Building Regulations and Fire Safety.</SPAN></P>

<P><STRONG>Bio</STRONG></P>

<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Lynsey is a graduate from the University of Greenwich having studied mechanical engineering before switching discipline to fire engineering and going on to study at UCLAN. She is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow with the Institution of Fire Engineers. After an initial period working within mechanical manufacturing developing specialist equipment for the oil and petrochemical industry, Lynsey moved to join LFB as part of their regulatory fire safety department. She is now a principal fire engineer and joint group head with a team of 14 specialist officers. Lynsey sits on various industry steering groups and technical committees on behalf of LFB and has represented the National Fire Chief’s Council (NFCC). She is also a STEM ambassador and is keen to see greater diversity within engineering as well as publicizing fire engineering as a career.</SPAN></P>
