Join us for a trip to the Greenham Common BBOWT Nature Reserve: part of one of the most extensive tracts of rare lowland heath in Southern England - a fragile and threatened habitat. Once notorious for the nuclear cruise missiles stored at the air base, it now supports very special wildlife including numerous rare and restricted-range species.
We will take a gentle stroll across the extensive heath searching for one of the most restricted-range butterflies in the UTB area. We should also see a wide variety of other wildlife. Target species: Grayling and other butterflies of heathland and the wider countryside.
Accessibility & risks: the main tracks across the common are level and accessible for those with limited walking ability; the undulating wooded valleys have uneven terrain including steps. Rabbit holes and trip hazards. Please check for ticks after the walk and let the leader know if you have picked up any ticks. (Tick advice)
