ANNE's Spring Conference

Following a successful initial meeting in 2016, in March 2017 we welcomed our network of academic, analysis and research professionals working in North East England to a conference at the NAO office in Newcastle.Since that inaugural meeting we have formalised this group into ANNE, the Analyst Network North East. The network aims to:*Connect people and exchange ideas on analysis and research taking place here in the North East, reaching across the public, private and academic sectors.*Promote learning about other techniques and opportunities from fellow North East analysts and researchers.*Raise the profile of the exciting, innovative and influential analysis and research done here in North East England.Our regular conferences are a great opportunity to join us to discuss analysis and research taking place across the academic, public and private sector in our region.So far, we have hosted conferences at the Core in Newcastle,The Dolphin Centre in Darlington, Urban Sciences Building at Newcastle University and the Durham University Business School, Durham.If you would like to engage with us you can find us on twitter @AnalystNetNE or join the group on LinkedIn ‘Analyst Network North East’.

We at Analyst Network North East are delighted to welcome you to the return of our Spring Conference - our first in-person event since 2019! The Conference will take place from 13:00 to 16:40 on Wednesday 4th May at the Ted Theatre in The Catalyst, home to the National Innovation Centre for Data.The first part of the event will involve local experts presenting how they are using data and analysis to support their mission to target environmental challenges in the North East. After some networking, the second part will celebrate the participants of our first ever student challenge, which has involved developing indicators to support the work of the North East Climate Coalition (NEECCo). Anyone with an interest in analysis or environmental sustainability is welcome to come along!Please note that the event is in-person only. Presenting the winners and runners up of our Student Analysis Challenge, including short presentations on their work.</li><li>16:30 - 16:40 - Thank you and close.</li></ul><h2>Topics and speakers</h2><h3>Data and Indicators at NEECCo</h3>NEECCo is a cross sector initiative, bringing the North East England region together to tackle climate change, reverse ecological collapse and deliver a just transition. Sir Paul Ennals CBE (Convening Chair of NEECCo) and Chris Ford (Executive group member of NEECCo) will be telling us about NEECCo&#x27;s work and how the group are using data and analysis to support it. Specifically, they will detail how they are developing a set of indicators to help understand if what we are doing is having the desired effect; if collectively and individually our changes in behaviours and consumption patterns are going the right way, fast enough. More on our speakers...Sir Paul Ennals CBE, Convening Chair of NEECCoPaul is highly experienced in chairing cross-sector coalitions and groups. President VONNE (Voluntary Organisations Network North East), adviser on many Government boards and committees and pioneering force behind the development of NEECCo; Paul is passionate about addressing the Climate Crisis through the collaboration of a regional, cross sector coalition. 
“We all have our own parts to play in reducing our carbon footprints, but there are also things done better at a regional level and that’s where NEECCo comes in, to encourage cross-sectoral and collaborative working. The North East is determined to work together to tackle the climate crisis - to reach net zero, to reverse the biodiversity collapse, and to a achieve a just transition. We need a way of measuring our progress that addresses the scale of our challenge, whilst being easy for everyone to understand. That’s where data comes in and why your hard work in this project is so important. You can help us become England&#x27;s Greenest Region, and develop a dataset that could influence other regions across the country.&quot;
Chris Ford, Executive group member of NEECCoChris undertakes research and development work in the voluntary and community sectors. His core focus is around diverse marginalised communities, stimulating and supporting personal, organisational and sectoral development. Executive group member of the NEECCo team, Chris is an influential lead in our indicators, sustainable finance and EDI working groups. 
“If our children and our children&#x27;s children are going to have anything like the quality of life we enjoy then we need to change how we live work and play. Data is crucial in helping us to make the best decisions. Indicators need to be understandable, simple and replicable, covering key aspects of the greening of a region. We look forward to seeing how your work in the ANNE Student Analysis Challenge will help the North East create a mirror to see if we are going in the right direction, fast enough.”
<h3>How environmental data drives action and delivers impact – but is it happening fast enough to make a difference? </h3>The Rivers Trust are experts that bring together people, knowledge, data and intelligence to address some of most challenging environmental, climatic and biodiversity crises. Here, Anna Gerring (Regional Development Manager) will showcase some of the activity that has been driven with data-led approaches, the impact that is having on how they manage water and land, and the holistic environmental and social benefits that can deliver. But is it enough and what more needs to be done?More on our speaker...Anna Gerring, Regional Development Manager at the Rivers TrustAnna is the Regional Development Manager responsible for facilitating cooperation across the member Trusts in the North and enabling the delivery of large-scale improvements to rivers and catchments. Working to secure commercial opportunities and sharing best practice, Anna supports the Trusts with the development of sustainable business models, strategic opportunities, and project management processes.<h3>ANNE&#x27;s Student Analysis Challenge</h3>Analyst Network North East (ANNE) have been running our first ever Student Challenge in partnership with the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD) and the North East England Climate Coalition (NEECCo).Participants of the Challenge were asked to develop indicators related to climate change and environmental sustainability, specifically for the North East of England. Challenge partners have provided a range of training sessions, workshops and drop-in sessions to support students less familiar with the subject area or analytical techniques.Over £2,000 in vouchers is up for grabs with projects being judged on areas such as creativity, robust application of analysis, communication, and identification of limitations. Winners and runners-up will be presented with their prizes at the Spring Conference, and some of them will be taking to the stage to tell us all about their fantastic work.We&#x27;d love to see you there in support all levels of data and analysis in the north east.
