Calling all students! Are you keen to build your analytical skills, fight climate change and win big prizes, all at the same time? If your answer is yes, ANNE has the Challenge for you!

Analyst Network North East (ANNE) are running our first ever Student Challenge, in partnership with the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD) and the North East England Climate Coalition (NEECCo).

As a participant of the Challenge, you will be asked to develop indicators related to climate change and environmental sustainability, specifically for the North East of England. By ‘indicator’, we mean something that measures the value of or change in a particular variable, such as the diversity of species, the quality of water, and the uptake of cycle-to-work schemes.

The Challenge will run from March 2nd to April 6th 2022. Plenty of information, data, training and support will be provided to ensure you have the tools you need to take part. It is open to students attending an educational institution in the North East of England, participating either as an individual or in a small team. There are plenty of reasons to take part:

Prizes! Over £2,000 in vouchers is up for grabs, divided between the top entries. Prizes will be presented at a celebratory closing event at The Catalyst, home to the National Innovation Centre for Data, in early May.
Develop and demonstrate your data analysis skills. Demand for workers with specialist data skills has more than tripled over five years according to a Royal Society report, so the Challenge is a fantastic way to build your knowledge, collect evidence for CVs and job applications, and kick-start a career in this field.
Network with peers and professional analysts. Gain exposure to North East organisations, grow your network of professional analysts and peers, and develop your confidence in a professional environment.
Take action on climate change. You will be working closely with and reporting back to the North East England Climate Coalition, meaning your work will have a real impact.

FAQs

Who can take part?

Sixth form/college students (over the age of 18 only), undergraduate students and post-graduate students studying any subject at an educational institution in the North East are welcome to take part. The universities we class as located in the North East are Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside.

Students are welcome to enter as an individual or as part of a small team, with a maximum team size of six.

When will the Challenge take place?

The Challenge will launch on March 2nd 2022. Students will then have five weeks to complete the challenge, with the submission deadline being April 6th. Results will be revealed at the celebratory closing event in early May.

What training will be provided?

ANNE will host a series of events throughout the Challenge to support your project and your personal development. These include access to discovery workshops with NICD to help plan your challenge, access to domain experts from NEECCo, as well as training sessions on how to manage projects, analytical techniques and presenting with impact.

How will entries be judged?

Entries will be judged against the Challenge’s marking criteria, which will be made available to students and judges upon the launch of the challenge. We can reveal for now though that the marking criteria will cover:

Creativity and innovation
Robust application of analysis
Structure of solution
Communicating with impact
Identifying limitations
Identifying the scope for future development

What will the prizes be?

Over £2,000 is up for grabs across the entries. £250 in vouchers will be awarded to the top individual submission and the top team submission. There will also be £100 in vouchers for each of 15 runners-up, and 'spot prizes' for entries the judges think are particularly creative or innovative.
