In real life: we are living through man-made mass extinction, and a climate crisis that has not been fully acknowledged - nor actively and meaningfully responded to - by architecture as a profession nor the education system that supports it and its future. Our provocation: the contemporary architectural education does not prepare practitioners nor students to practise in the context of climate breakdown, and this demands urgent address.We also face a health and mental well-being crisis on an unprecedented scale: practitioners and students struggling has been normalised for years but its acceptance is thankfully beginning to come to an end; yet we are only just starting to wake up as a profession to the effects that our buildings have upon our health. So, the <a href="https://www.crumblemag.com/2019/05/educating-for-our-future/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Anthropocene Architecture School</a> has been initiated as a catalyst and collective to restoratively address these concerns head-on - resting upon three pillars: Equality+Equity; Pedagogy+Practice; and Sustainability. Join us, in the oldest music hall in the world, as we create an open forum to catalyse immediate and paradigm shifting action on these topics. This forum shall be facilitated in an inclusive manner as used in non-hierarchial groups such as Extinction Rebellion to break down barriers that traditionally exist between academics, practitioners and students in architecture, and have exacerbated issues within it. This shall ensure that no one voice dominates proceedings and any inputs that are not aired due to time constraints shall be collected for inclusion in future material.Given the impact that our built environment has upon human and planetary health, we can no longer compartmentalise sustainability - in any form - as a specialism, and it must be integrated into all that we do. Education has the potential to be the key to catalysing this; so, to paraphrase Bruce King's introduction to The New Carbon Architecture: "Shall we dance?".AboutThe Anthropocene Architecture School is a developing endeavour to foster a regenerative evolution in architectural education: starting in university and continuing through practice. Initiated in the wake of 2018's IPCC Report giving us now less than 11 years to mitigate catastrophic runaway climate change and to address - now quantified - knowledge gaps in a curriculum, and CPD programs, that do not prepare future architects to practise in the context of ongoing climate breakdown. Past actions include the compilation of a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/anthropocene.archilibrary/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Climate Breakdown Reading List</a>, the compilation of a <a href="https://issuu.com/scottmcaulay/docs/student_understanding_of_sustainabi" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">report quantifying gaps in architectural education</a>, and the publishing an <a href="https://twitter.com/AnthropoceneAr1/status/1129330886007283712" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">open letter sent to every school of architecture in the U.K.</a>, calling upon them to treat the crisis we are facing as a crisis and to declare a Climate Emergency. Future actions shall include a regular podcast, a tour of schools of architecture, and a skill-sharing endeavour across the country with a host of collaborators.
